She Left She Thrived She’s Worth Billions novel Chapter 714

He had only set up the championship on a whim to test Melanie's pharmacology skills. He hadn't expected it to escalate into a violent spectacle.

"What a shame. If I had known it was going to be this entertaining, I would have gone in person. Maybe I could have been the one playing hero for you, Angel," Shawn muttered to himself with a reckless, mocking grin.

He knew better, of course. He would never have taken the hit for her. Even if that boiling pot of soup had splashed right across Melanie's beautiful face, he wouldn't have cared.

To him, Melanie was just a fascinating new toy. If the toy broke and lost its value, he would simply find another one.

"But that boyfriend of hers..." Shawn's brow twitched in genuine disgust.

"Who knew men could actually be that pathetic and devoted?"

It made his skin crawl.

At the Lexington Medical Center.

Preston lay on his stomach in a private ward. An IV dripped into one arm, while his other hand tightly gripped Melanie's.

"Are we having carrots for dinner?" he asked casually.

"What is that supposed to mean?" Melanie snapped, her voice trembling.

"Because you're tearing up like a baby rabbit," Preston teased, trying to lift his hand to wipe the tears from her eyes. Given his position, he couldn't quite reach.

"I'm heartbroken because my boyfriend is in pain. Leave me alone," Melanie choked out, wiping her wet cheeks with her free hand.

While Preston's life wasn't in danger, taking an entire boiling pot of soup to the back was agonizing. Throughout the frantic drive to the hospital, he hadn't made a single sound of complaint. But Melanie had seen the deathly pallor of his skin and the tight clenching of his jaw. She knew he was suffering.

He didn't have to take that hit. He did it to protect her.
