Everett spoke quietly, not needing to clarify who he meant.
“I know.”
Melanie shrugged.
“Do you... want me to get rid of him for you?”
Everett knew perfectly well that she wasn't going to leave the building as long as Preston was out there.
“You wouldn't be able to.”
Her casual dismissal made Everett frown.
He hated feeling utterly useless in her eyes.
“If he's harassing you, I can call the cops. They'll haul him away.”
He thought he was being helpful, but the moment the words left his mouth, a flash of annoyance crossed her face.
Realizing he had misstepped, Everett quickly backpedaled.
“Sorry, I... did I say something wrong?”
Melanie let out a heavy breath and met his gaze.
“Everett, you don't need to involve yourself in my business with Preston. Just head home.”
Shut down so completely, Everett opened his mouth to argue but thought better of it.
“Right... I'll see you tomorrow.”
At the door, he couldn't resist casting one last glance over his shoulder. Melanie was already staring out the window again.
Once Everett was gone, she pulled out her phone, her expression grim, and fired off a quick text.
Half an hour later, she finally clocked out.
The night had settled over the city, streets alive with neon lights and a steady hum of traffic.
Melanie stopped three paces away from Preston.
His skin was alarmingly pale, his lips lacked color, and a faint sheen of sweat clung to his forehead.
She knew the severe burns on his back were far from healed.
He was physically fit and healed quickly, but he was supposed to be on strict bed rest.
He absolutely shouldn't be standing out in the street for hours on end.
Melanie clenched her hands behind her back.
