Bryant had already asked Elina these questions, just as Melanie had requested.
However, Elina hadn't provided any useful information.
Even so, Melanie insisted on coming to ask in person.
For one thing, Elina had just recovered from a severe illness, and Melanie wanted to visit her.
For another, Melanie strongly believed that Elina was the key to finding the person who deployed the virus.
Elina blinked her large, watery eyes, filled with the innocent sincerity of a child.
She looked a bit confused, as if she couldn't understand why both her dad and Melanie kept asking her the same questions over and over.
"No... there weren't any strange people, and I didn't play with anyone either!"
Tilting her round little head, Elina pouted her lips.
"Hmm... I can't remember..."
"Elina, try to think really hard."
Melanie's tone grew a bit urgent. Just then, Preston suddenly interrupted her.
"Melanie..."
Lifting her gaze, Melanie looked at Preston and saw him holding out a box toward her.
It was a cake box.
Melanie's eyes lit up.
If Preston hadn't reminded her, she would have completely forgotten about the cake she had bought specifically for Elina.
"Never mind, let's not think about that right now. Elina, let's eat some cake!"
With that, Melanie opened the box.
"Ta-da!"
Hearing Melanie's own sound effects, Elina stared at the cake inside, her eyes wide with delight.
"Wow! It's my absolute favorite, Mango Cheesecake!"
"That's right."
Melanie nodded as she carefully lifted the Mango Cheesecake out of the box, while Preston efficiently distributed the plates and small forks.
As everyone enjoyed the delicious cake together, the atmosphere in the living room grew warm and sweet, shedding the heavy tension from moments before.
Eating her cake, Melanie couldn't help but criticize herself for being too impatient earlier.
Elina had always been a sensible kid.
But no matter how sensible she was, she was still just a child.
Kids had fleeting memories, and she certainly didn't understand the gravity of the questions Melanie was relentlessly asking.
Bryant immediately tried to stop her.
He mistakenly thought Elina hadn't had enough Mango Cheesecake and was trying to snatch Preston's slice.
"No, Daddy."
Elina shook her head at Bryant.
Then, she stepped between Melanie and Preston and began waving her hands over the slice of cake.
"All done!"
Elina excitedly threw her arms up in the air.
Melanie and Preston exchanged confused glances.
Neither of them had a clue what Elina was doing.
"Elina, what were you just doing?"
Melanie asked curiously.
"I'm doing a magic trick!"
As she spoke, Elina waved her hands over the cake again.
"Abracadabra! This way, the Mango Cheesecake will taste even better."
