The second the words escaped her lips, Daphne aggressively snatched a throw pillow from the sofa and buried her face in it.
I'm losing my mind. I'm absolutely losing it!
She mentally berated herself, her cheeks burning against the fabric.
Was she actually falling for Everett Kingsley?
Clutching the pillow for dear life, Daphne practically writhed on the couch like a dying fish.
The Rosa Archipelago was in a completely different time zone than Averin. Right now, the sun was shining brightly.
Preston Whitmore sat in the back of a sleek luxury SUV, listening to Philip's report.
"Mr. Whitmore, Mr. Blackwell confirmed that Ms. Royce was indeed harassed by her ex-husband at the banquet. However... before he could step in, Minister Halevy intervened and backed her up."
"Minister Halevy?"
Preston's gaze sharpened slightly.
"Yes. The recently retired Minister Lilian Halevy from the Department of Health. It seems she's planning to settle down in Averin."
"Understood."
With that, Philip immediately stepped out and opened the car door for his boss.
Preston stepped out into the tropical heat. The venue for the Global Wellness Investment Summit loomed just ahead.
Originally, the summit hadn't been scheduled in The Rosa Archipelago at all.
Preston had pulled massive strings with the organizers to abruptly relocate the entire event here.
His true motive, of course, was to use the summit as a cover to scout the region.
He had initially planned to bring Melanie along so they could track down Shawn Sterling together.
But Nathaniel Royce had just dumped a massive new project in Melanie's lap, and with this summit suddenly pulling him away, their joint mission had been put on hold.
On second thought, Preston realized the delay was a blessing in disguise.
The Rosa Archipelago was a volatile cluster of island nations with an unstable political climate.
He still hadn't uncovered the full extent of the dark forces backing Shawn Sterling.
Dragging Melanie into this unknown territory could have put her in immense danger.
That was exactly why he engineered the summit's move to Ruben Isle within the archipelago. He could use the prestigious event as a smokescreen to gather intel and assess the threat level first.
The banquet had just concluded. The moment Lilian stepped out of The Crimson Coast Pavilion, she pulled out her phone and dialed a number.
"Hello? Tessie..."
"We're far too old for you to be calling me Tessie," Tessa Rowland's voice crackled through the speaker.
"What brings on this sudden call?"
Lilian chuckled, her tone laced with conspiratorial glee.
"I just left a banquet, and you'll never guess who I ran into."
"Who could you possibly run into at one of those dreadful things?"
Tessa sounded entirely unimpressed. She had zero patience for high-society schmoozing.
"Your future granddaughter-in-law."
"You saw Melanie?!"
Tessa's voice skyrocketed an octave in pure shock.
"Wait a minute, how did you even know Melanie is my future granddaughter-in-law?"
