"What's wrong?" Daphne asked, completely confused by her sudden jump.
"Nothing."
Melanie held up her bottle of juice.
"The juice just tastes better when I'm standing."
Daphne: ?????
Hearing the full story, Melanie realized that the two of them hadn't really interacted all that much beforehand.
The one-night stand was nothing more than an accident.
But love and attraction weren't exactly measured by a stopwatch.
The eyes never lied.
Watching Daphne's expression, she could tell her friend's feelings for Everett were 100% genuine.
"I know he's obsessed with you, Melanie..."
Daphne gripped Melanie's shoulders, her gaze unflinching.
"And I know I don't hold a candle to you in any department..."
"Daphne..."
"But I'm still going to shoot my shot. That way, I won't have any regrets."
Seeing the sheer determination on her face, Melanie opened her mouth to speak, hesitated, and ultimately swallowed her doubts. She couldn't bring herself to rain on the parade.
In all honesty...
She didn't think Everett was the right guy for Daphne.
He was deeply introverted, insecure, and carried way too much emotional baggage.
Even if they did end up together, the relationship would likely put a massive amount of pressure on Daphne.
But...
Melanie kept those worries to herself.
Daphne was a grown woman who could take responsibility for her own choices and had her own judgment.
Whether Everett was 'the one' wasn't really Melanie's place to dictate.
Since Daphne had made up her mind to pursue him, Melanie's job as her best friend was to be her wingwoman... and offer some strategic assistance.
Melanie was currently holding no less than five dresses, each one more stunning than the last—covered in lace trimming or dazzling sequins.
They were gorgeous, sure. But Daphne hadn't worn anything remotely like them in her entire life.
"Melanie, I'm a club owner, a badass. You want me to wear this?"
"Oh, please! That 'badass' phase is ancient history."
Melanie waved off the excuse, shoved all five dresses into Daphne's chest, and physically pushed her into the fitting room.
"Hurry up and change. I want a private fashion show!"
"There's nothing to show off, I swear..."
Scratching her head in defeat, Daphne dragged the gowns into the stall.
On Melanie, these dresses would look straight off a runway. On her? She was pretty sure she'd look like a clown.
Sighing to herself, Daphne examined the luxurious fabrics.
It wasn't that she didn't like feminine clothes. She had just always assumed she couldn't pull them off.
Bracing herself, she slipped into the first dress and stepped out of the fitting room.
