"I... I want to accept Daphne's confession."
Melanie paused, clearly caught off guard by the sudden announcement.
She parted her lips, quickly shifting gears.
"That's great! Congratulations."
Seeing the genuine, happy smile on her face, Everett forced a bitter grin.
This wasn't a rash decision.
He had spent the entire night thinking about it.
He was just an ordinary guy.
He didn't have a powerful background or endless wealth.
Even as the COO of the Royce Group, he owed his position to someone else's generosity.
No matter how hard he worked, he could never be in Melanie's league.
Since Daphne liked him, and they had already crossed that line, he needed to take responsibility for her.
And besides...
Everett cast his gaze back toward Melanie.
If he was with Daphne, Melanie would be happy and relieved.
So...
this was the best possible outcome.
A win-win for everyone.
Everett looked at Melanie, and she stared back.
Just a moment ago, before congratulating him, she had wanted to ask him a question—
Everett, do you actually like Daphne?
But the words died on her tongue.
There was... absolutely no point in asking.
When he told her about the confession, there hadn't been a single trace of joy in his eyes.
Eyes were terrible liars.
Melanie could tell he didn't harbor any romantic feelings for Daphne.
At least, not right now.
But Daphne adored him, and since he was willing to give it a shot, maybe over time he would recognize her amazing qualities and fall for her.
After all, most love stories in this world blossomed over time.
On the way, he drove past a florist. He almost kept going, but suddenly threw the car into reverse.
At the Eclipse Noir Club, Daphne had been completely distracted all morning.
She had no idea if she should reach out to Everett.
She had literally poured her heart out to him last night!
And he hadn't given her an immediate answer.
Or rather, she had completely chickened out and bolted before he could say a word.
Now the whole situation was terribly awkward, and she was at a total loss.
"Should I just call him or shoot him a text?"
Daphne muttered to herself.
"No... I can't rush these things..."
"He's probably still thinking it over..."
"But what if he forgot, or just brushed it off entirely?"
The more she overthought it, the more panicked she became. She grabbed her crossbody bag and stormed out of the club.
She nearly collided head-on with someone walking toward the entrance.
