Miles kept a light grip on Quinn's waist, nodding gracefully with all the charm of a perfect gentleman.
Once the banquet concluded, Miles led her to the car. The second the door clicked shut, he dropped her hand like it burned him, his face immediately returning to its usual cold detachment.
It was as if the entire evening had been an illusion, abruptly shattered by reality.
Quinn slowly curled the fingers he had just discarded. Lowering her gaze, she deliberately slid closer to the door, eager to put as much distance between them as possible.
The show was over. She had expected nothing less.
The car settled into a suffocating silence. Hunter drove in the front, lost in thought.
When Mr. York had been dancing with Mrs. York earlier, it was obvious he was putting on a show, but not all of it felt fake. His brow had relaxed, and occasionally, a genuine smile had touched his lips.
Why had he instantly reverted to this hostile coldness the second they got in the car?
Had he imagined it?
The boss's mind was an impenetrable fortress, impossible to read. Hunter shook his head and focused on the road.
The car departed the manor, winding down into the valley and onto a series of dark, desolate roads.
The area was isolated, with barely a soul in sight, and the streetlights were dim and flickering.
Ring, ring, ring...
Miles's phone buzzed with a frantic call from Jade. "Miles, please... help me. I slipped and hurt my leg."
"What? Jade, where are you?"
"I'm at... Mount Moriah..."
Miles's expression shifted drastically. "Jade, don't panic. I'm on my way."
He hung up the phone and ordered coldly, "Quinn, get out of the car. Find your own way back."
Quinn's chest tightened, and she stared at him in disbelief. "Miles, we're in a foreign country. I don't know this place at all, and you want to leave me on the side of the road?"
"Get out. Once I get Jade to the hospital, I'll send Hunter back to pick you up."
Miles was deeply concerned about Jade's injury. Mount Moriah was notorious for its criminal element, and he was terrified she might run into real trouble if he was late.
