She Walked Away With His Twins, While He Begged the Ground She Walked On novel Chapter 21

Miles York wore casual loungewear, shedding the cold, imposing aura of his usual black dress shirts, yet the harshness gathered in his furrowed brows remained undiminished.

"You've been leaving early and coming back late every day. If Jack hadn't called you today, were you planning on not coming back at all?"

Quinn Avery briefly averted her gaze. That was exactly what she had been doing.

"I stayed at the sanatorium to keep my mother company. Do I have to report every little thing to you?"

Miles's expression stiffened, his gaze turning even more somber.

"Quinn, didn't I tell you? We aren't divorced yet. Mind your status."

He repeated the same lines every day like a broken record. Quinn rolled her eyes.

"Miles, didn't I also tell you? You constantly remind me to mind my status, but what about you? You and Jade Winter are practically glued to each other every single day. What gives you the right to lecture me?"

As soon as the words left her mouth, Quinn regretted them. It made her sound like she actually cared about his relationship with Jade.

After all, theirs was merely a contract marriage.

Miles's dark eyes were bottomless, his tone dismissive.

"We are only in a contract marriage. Aren't you overstepping your bounds?"

She knew this arrogant bastard would use that against her.

A faint pang of humiliation tugged at Quinn's heart.

Tightening her grip on her backpack straps, her eyes turned icy. "I'll return that exact line to you. Don't operate on a double standard."

Miles's gaze sharpened like a blade, his entire demeanor shifting into something suffocating and oppressive.

Quinn avoided his cutting stare, lowering her eyes. She didn't want to waste any more time on him.

She still had work to finish and had already lost an hour on the commute. She walked briskly toward her room.

Miles felt a frustrating tightness in his chest. He spoke coldly.

"Jack, starting tomorrow, Quinn is not allowed to leave the house. Every time she wants to go out, she must get my explicit permission."

Jack remained silently conflicted.

...

Back in her separate bedroom, Quinn opened her laptop and resumed her pending translation work.

Around eleven o'clock that night, her stomach rumbled. She stretched her limbs and decided to head to the kitchen to whip up a late-night snack.
