Yara led the two kids back to their campsite. Luna poked her little head around, her soft voice laced with concern for her mother.
"Yara, Weird Uncle looks really mad. Is he going to yell at Mommy?"
"I'm right here, sweetie. Don't worry, I won't let him bully your mom."
Caleb was also watching the distant confrontation closely, his brows furrowed in deep thought.
Mommy and Daddy were together, right? So why did this Weird Uncle act as though he was Mommy's husband?
Miles frowned sharply. "Quinn, Grandma Evelyn wanted to buy the kids lunch. Why did you refuse? Couldn't you see how devastated she was?"
"It's blatantly obvious she adores Luna and Caleb. Couldn't you have just let them keep an old woman company for one meal to make her happy?"
Quinn's nose stung. Did he think she didn't want the kids to have lunch with her?
That was their actual great-grandmother. They should be sitting at her knee, sharing endless joy and laughter with her.
But...
The blood relatives were standing inches apart, entirely oblivious to the profound bond connecting them.
And Miles actually had the nerve to ask her why she refused?
She wanted to scream with bitter laughter. Wasn't it entirely because of the arrogant, heartless man standing in front of her?
If he hadn't discarded her and her unborn babies back then, would she have been forced to hide her pregnancy and raise Caleb and Luna in secret?
Would her children have been forced to live in the shadows, constantly ridiculed as fatherless bastards?
She ruthlessly suppressed the raging tempest of emotions in her chest and replied coldly.
"Miles, I just told you. Luna already promised her grandmother—Caleb's grandmother—that we would visit. We can't break that promise."
The truth was, she was terrified Evelyn and Ingrid would discover the truth. Their intuition was razor-sharp, unlike this oblivious, cold-blooded man.
Miles's face darkened. "Luna and Caleb can see their grandmother any day of the week. Skipping one afternoon won't kill anyone."
"I'm sorry, but it actually means a lot to her."
Miles choked on his words, instantly realizing she was just being difficult on purpose. She was still holding a grudge over the argument from the past few days.
He clenched his jaw. "Then let me ask you this. Were you really at the nursing home yesterday, or were you out to dinner with Luna?"
Quinn's eyes flickered. Clearly, he had heard the server over the phone.
"So what if I was? I didn't want our dinner interrupted. Is that a crime?"
