Quinn smiled slightly and asked another question. "Then tell me, the book says his life left no trace, like what being erased by what?"
Jade's pupils shrank. Her face went deathly pale as her fingers curled into tight fists.
She knew Quinn was digging another hole for her to jump into. If she couldn't answer, it would prove to everyone that she hadn't even read the novel, let alone translated it.
"I..."
Seeing her stuttering panic, the crowd frowned in unison. "Even if she can't recite it perfectly, shouldn't she at least have a general idea?"
"Looking at her, it seems like she can't even get a single word out."
The way the audience looked at her shifted dramatically. "Didn't she just submit this? How could she forget so quickly?"
"Did she really steal Quinn's manuscript? Did she not translate a single word of that novel?"
Yara folded her arms. "If you can answer it, it proves the translation is yours. If you can't, it proves you stole it from Quinn."
Jade's skin crawled with discomfort as anxiety clawed at her insides. Her nails dug into her palms as she tried desperately to steady her racing heart.
Luke thought it was completely unreasonable. Jade worked so hard every day, how could she possibly memorize every little detail? This Quinn woman was just intentionally trying to humiliate her.
Stepping protectively in front of Jade, he barked at Quinn, "Jade is incredibly busy with work every day. How could she possibly remember all of that? Do you think she's like you, sitting around doing absolutely nothing while someone else pays her bills?"
Cody echoed the outrage. "You've talked a big game, so where is the proof? Without evidence, this is nothing but defamation. Jade could sue you!"
Seeing Cody and Luke fiercely stepping up to bat for her, Jade finally forced herself to calm down.
Wayne West, their star witness, wasn't here. Whatever so-called evidence they had couldn't possibly be a real threat to her.
They hadn't shown any proof yet because they had none. They were just bluffing, trying to make her crack under pressure.
