"Luna, I just thought that since you two are the same age, you could play together. I never meant to use you as a prop."
Luna was far from satisfied with that answer. "Weird Uncle, you're a liar. I'm not talking to you anymore."
Miles felt his chest tighten. For some inexplicable reason, hearing Luna dismiss him made him panic slightly.
"Luna, you're misunderstanding me. I really wanted you to come have fun... You can just treat Leo like an older brother and play on the swings together."
Sensing her mother's silent distress, Luna turned her face away. "I already have a brother. I don't need anyone else to be my brother."
"Quinn, I don't want to play anymore. I want to go home."
Quinn hugged her daughter tightly, suppressing the overwhelming swell of emotions, and said gently.
"Alright, let's go. I'll take you somewhere else for a kid's meal."
She'd call Caleb and Yara and they could all eat together.
Her daughter's only brother was Caleb.
Miles tried to say something else, but Jade tugged on his sleeve, holding Leo tight. Her voice was breathy and fragile.
"Miles, Leo is hungry."
Miles barely touched his dinner, his mind completely preoccupied with how to explain things to Luna.
If Luna didn't like playing with Leo, he would respect that. He would never set something like this up again.
Jade played the gentle, understanding companion perfectly. "Miles, why do you look so down? Is it because of that argument over the swing between Leo and Luna?"
Miles had zero interest in discussing Luna with her. "No, I was just going over my itinerary for the trip abroad."
Jade's heart soared with the thought that they would soon be spending alone time together.
"Miles, after your business trip is over, could you take me to Prague?"
"I thought you were staying in the country so Leo could compete in the National Junior Prodigy Challenge?"
Jade's expression faltered for a split second before she recovered smoothly. "Macy can go with him. My brother could take him, too. It's the same thing."
"Alright. Let's hope Leo makes it to the next round."
Jade had absolute faith in her son. "Leo is brilliant. He's definitely going to advance."
Miles suddenly remembered the little boy in the space warrior hat. If that kid entered, he would undoubtedly make it to the finals.
