If it weren't for little Luna, he wouldn't even waste his breath on her.
Besides, he still had the lucky charm she bought him sitting right there in his car anyway.
...
Ingrid and Gail helped Grandma Evelyn pack her things. Quinn walked her to the car. "Grandma Evelyn, please take good care of yourself."
Grandma Evelyn patted her hand gently. "Martha is doing better now, right?"
At the mention of her mother, a lump formed in Quinn's throat. "My mother has good days and bad days, but she still recognizes me."
Grandma Evelyn instructed Ingrid to pull out a bank card containing fifteen thousand dollars and handed it to Quinn so she could buy some daily necessities for Martha.
Quinn immediately refused. "Grandma Evelyn, I haven't even finished spending the money you gave me last time. I can't take this, thank you."
Grandma Evelyn clicked her tongue softly. "Child, when Grandma gives you something, you take it. This is just a little token of my care."
Ingrid and Gail chimed in to persuade her. "Mrs. York, please just accept it. Don't make it difficult for Madam."
Quinn still refused. Taking money from Grandma Evelyn meant opening herself up to more relentless mockery from Macy York later.
Seeing her absolute refusal, Grandma Evelyn handed the card to Gail instead. "If you run into any trouble, you tell me. And if Macy gives you a hard time again, you let me know."
The older woman was well aware that her granddaughter frequently bullied Quinn in private, but since Quinn always suffered in silence, all she could do was offer financial compensation.
She had lectured and punished Macy countless times, but the girl refused to listen.
"Okay."
As soon as Grandma Evelyn drove off, Gail shoved the card directly into Quinn's hand. "Mrs. York, you deserve this. Think about it—when your child gets bullied, humiliated, and put down by someone else's kid outside, doesn't the other parent eventually have to pay up to settle it?"
"Just look at it that way. You absolutely deserve this money."
Looking down at the card pressed into her palm, Quinn lowered her eyes and gripped it tightly.
If Macy ever tried to use money to humiliate her again, she could just slap this exact card right back in her face.
With that thought, she finally kept it.
...
Quinn returned to Fairview Apartments. When she unboxed the phone watch Miles had sent for Luna, she found a completely battered, second-hand device.
Stuck to it was a small note: "Wild Child, you only deserve second-hand trash."
The sheer disdain radiated from the paper.
Quinn trembled violently, a bone-deep chill sweeping through her veins.
