By the time he reached her, Quinn had already put her mask back on.
Seeing the tall, familiar figure standing before her, she froze for a split second.
But she quickly regained her composure and turned to walk the other way.
He called out, stopping her in her tracks. "Wait a moment, please."
Quinn tensed up. Did he recognize her?
He shouldn't have. She instinctively touched the mask on her face—it was straight, so there was no way Miles could tell it was her.
"Quinn?"
His deep, resonant voice carried a hint of suspicion as his gaze bore into her, silently analyzing her features.
Quinn's heart skipped a beat, a flash of panic crossing her eyes.
Thankfully, the dim night lighting provided enough cover to keep her from giving herself away.
Realizing he was just testing the waters, she quickly steadied her nerves, radiating a cold, distant aura as she replied in English.
"Pardon? Sir, I don't get it."
Seeing her speak flawless English, noting that her voice sounded different, and observing her elegant, aloof demeanor, Miles wavered.
Miles offered a polite apology. "Pardon me, you look like someone I know."
Yet his gaze continued to scrutinize her. Was she really not Quinn?
Their figures were so similar, and her luminous skin matched perfectly.
He suddenly felt an intense curiosity about the features hidden beneath that butterfly mask.
He tried to get a better look at her eyes, but the woman seemed reluctant to endure his stare and kept her gaze lowered.
"So you mistook me for someone else, sir."
(You have the wrong person.)
Miles replied apologetically, "Sorry."
Still unwilling to drop it, he asked, "Could you take off your mask?"
(Could you take it off?)
Quinn flatly refused. "I'm afraid I can't."
(No.)
Her tone dripped with icy detachment. "That's asking too much."
(It's inappropriate.)
"Sorry, I just..." Miles started.
He wanted to say more, but Quinn cut him off.
"Excuse me."
