A little romance between a young couple was nothing to fuss over, right?
During dinner, Nathan and Eleanor took over feeding Jocelyn. Eleanor's eyes were practically glued to the toddler's face, wishing she could pour all the love and guilt she harbored for Annie and Hilda into this sweet little girl. If she hadn't been afraid of overstepping, she would have begged to take the baby home for the night, just so the late Matilda could look down from heaven and see her.
But she knew better and let it go.
Tonight was about Luther and Hilda finally reuniting as a family.
...
After dinner, Nathan and Eleanor prepared to leave.
Luther walked them out alone.
Standing on the front steps, Eleanor turned back, feeling the need to give her son one last piece of advice. "She doesn't remember anything, so don't treat her like some naive schoolteacher. And whatever you do, do not lock her away in this house. That's not fair to her... And don't be a bastard. Her world is completely pure right now. To her, you are her very first boyfriend."
Luther agreed in a low, solemn voice.
Eleanor couldn't resist reaching out to straighten his collar.
"This is a second chance sent straight from heaven."
"Do not fail her again."
"Make sure the rest of her life is filled with happiness."
"And whatever you owe Damien Croix, it will never be enough to repay him."
Luther nodded once more.
He watched his parents get into the car, the sleek black sedan slowly disappearing into the night.
The evening air was crisp and cool.
He stood there for a long time, eventually pulling a pack of cigarettes from his pocket. He lit one, inhaling slowly, but stubbed it out after only a few drags. Turning around, he walked back into the villa. The living room was bursting with life. Annie was holding little Jocelyn, while Landon hovered closely, carefully feeding his baby sister snacks as if she were the most precious treasure in the world.
Luther's heart softened completely.
He stood in the entryway, watching his wife and children.
