Both Luther and Joyce froze instantly.
Even though Jocelyn was just a toddler, she seemed to understand the gravity of where they were. She wrapped her little arms tightly around Luther's neck and whimpered, "Why is Auntie in the stone? I don't want Auntie in the stone! Waaah... I don't want Auntie to die!"
Luther's heart ached with a damp, heavy sorrow.
Under the autumn sun, the tall, handsome man held his biological daughter tight against his chest, soothing her with a gentle voice. "That's not Auntie, sweetheart! Auntie is right here with us."
The toddler continued to sniffle and whine into his shoulder.
The two-year-old had the billionaire completely wrapped around her little finger.
Joyce stepped forward and gently laid the white calla lilies in front of the headstone. She was still reeling internally. The resemblance was simply too uncanny.
Seeds of doubt had been planted in Joyce's mind.
But she never once suspected she was actually Hilda.
Because she was Damien's sister. She had her own driver's license, her own childhood memories, and a completely traceable past. To her, the only logical conclusion was that she was Mrs. Sanford's replacement.
Yet, Luther treated her exceptionally well.
He was incredible to her brother and Jocelyn, too.
Damien had finally agreed to let him legally adopt Jocelyn.
Every weekend, Luther took her and the kids to visit Mrs. Sanford's mother. He treated her like family. She frequently dined at the Sanford estate, where the staff all casually referred to her as the 'Young Missus.' It made Joyce feel incredibly awkward at first, but everyone acted as if it were the most natural thing in the world, as if she had always belonged in that house.
The Christmas Eve ball arrived.
Luther proposed to Joyce.
He presented her with a custom 6-carat pink diamond, entirely one of a kind.
And their marriage would not include a prenuptial agreement.
The news sent shockwaves through Alpha City's elite circles.
But no one dared to gossip openly. Everyone treated her with nothing but absolute respect and courtesy, as if it were simply the way things were meant to be. From Joyce's perspective, stepping into Luther's world had handed her everything on a silver platter. It felt as though she had seamlessly inherited all of Mrs. Sanford's resources and connections.
Soren Sutton, the young heir, seemed to harbor a quiet admiration for her.
Naomi Zeller, the fierce female executive, lovingly called her 'sister.'
Gardenia doted on her unconditionally.
Luther's parents treated her exactly like a beloved daughter-in-law.
