Morning.
Joyce woke up in the massive bed.
She was the only one there.
Luther and little Jocelyn were nowhere to be seen.
However, the joyful sound of children laughing drifted up from downstairs. Annie, Landon, and Jocelyn were playing together. Jocelyn's sweet, infectious giggles echoed through the air. Unable to resist, Joyce slipped out of bed, parted the curtains, and stepped onto the balcony to look down at the yard.
It was autumn, and the garden was bathed in golden light.
The three children were running around.
Jocelyn was wobbling as she chased after her older brother and sister.
Suddenly, she tripped and fell.
The toddler immediately burst into tears.
A mature, handsome man quickly scooped her up, gently brushing the dirt off her clothes. He cradled her in his arms, inspecting her for injuries while murmuring soft, comforting words. Even with tears still wet on her cheeks, the little girl leaned in and planted a sloppy kiss on his face, flashing a bright, toothy smile. It was an incredibly precious sight.
Little Landon looked up at them admiringly.
A warm smile spread across Annie's face.
The picture-perfect moment tugged at Joyce's heart.
Just as she was absorbed in the scene, the man suddenly looked up, their eyes locking. Even from a distance, she could see the dark, teasing glint in his gaze, instantly reminding her of their passionate encounter in the study last night. Her face flushed a deep crimson, and she quickly ducked back inside, her heart racing.
By the time she finished getting ready, she realized it was already eleven o'clock.
As she was washing her face, she heard soft footsteps behind her.
A pair of strong arms wrapped securely around her waist.
Joyce stiffened but tried to continue washing her face. When his hands started to wander inappropriately, she finally spoke up, her voice lacking any real bite: "You went so many times last night... I'm a little sore."
The man's hot breath fanned against the delicate skin behind her ear.
"I won't do anything."
"Finish getting ready."
"After lunch, I'm taking you somewhere."
