By the time they left City Hall, the late afternoon sun was casting golden rays across the steps.
Loyce pushed Lucian's wheelchair slowly down the ramp, their shadows stretching long and intertwined behind them.
At the entrance, the Lonsdale family—minus Hank—and Zeke Shapiro were waiting. Both families were dressed in formal attire, holding bouquets and gifts to celebrate the newlyweds.
"Loyce, I hope the rest of your life is filled with happiness," Forrest said, placing a bouquet in her arms. He then turned a warning glare on Lucian. "Marrying you like this is a huge compromise for her. She's sacrificing a lot for you. Do you understand that?"
"I understand, Forrest," Lucian replied, his tone solemn and grave. "I will give her everything I have to offer, including my life."
Hearing him use the familiar title made Forrest internally bristle, but he couldn't bring himself to argue. He sighed and patted Lucian on the shoulder. "I wish you both happiness."
Morris, on the other hand, had very few objections. Smiling, he handed Loyce a binder of sheet music. "I originally wrote this piece for my own future wedding, but I think the melody fits your story much better. This is your wedding gift. I hope you like it."
Loyce playfully chided him. "Everyone knows an original Morris composition is priceless."
Morris hugged her and ruffled her hair. "When you have the actual ceremony, I won't have anything better to top this."
"I do," Gordon chimed in. "As your grandfather, my ultimate gift for my granddaughter can only be unveiled at the wedding."
He leveled a look at Lucian. "You better show me that grand wedding, and prove your sincerity. Got it?"
"Understood, Grandpa," Lucian nodded, before looking over at Zeke. "Grandpa."
Zeke stepped forward, leaning down to embrace him tightly. "I just want you to be happy," he murmured.
Lucian could feel the heavy remorse and sorrow radiating from the older man. He patted his grandfather's back gently. "Thank you."
Gordon spoke up. "I've arranged a small banquet at the manor. Zeke, let's head over and celebrate the newlyweds."
The group returned to the manor. That evening, Gordon lit up the estate's sprawling lawn with a magnificent fireworks display. The whole family gathered in the courtyard to watch the sky light up.
Morris held up a tablet, video-calling Hank so he wouldn't miss the beautiful moment.
Surrounded by rare laughter and joy, Lucian kept pulling out his marriage license just to look at it, gently running his thumb over the cover. Anyone could see how deeply he cherished it.
Morris joked, "If you keep rubbing it like that, it's going to be worn out before the ink dries."
