He offered the box, his gaze shifting down to Gigi, a faint, incredibly soft smile touching his lips.

Giselle had no idea what his endgame was, but she accepted the box anyway. "We have somewhere to be."

Gigi looked way up at Hank, blinked her big eyes, and greeted him politely, "Good morning, Sir."

Hank crouched down to her eye level, his voice turning incredibly gentle. "Good morning, Gigi. You're dressed so beautifully today. Where are you heading?"

Gigi eagerly volunteered the information. "Mommy and I are going to my school's sports day! She took the day off just to be with me!"

Hank raised an eyebrow, feigning the perfect amount of surprise. "A family sports day? That sounds like a lot of fun."

Gigi's eyes sparkled as she began chattering away. "Yeah! The teachers said mommies and daddies can play games together and win huge prizes! But I don't have a dad..."

Her voice suddenly trailed off. She grabbed a fistful of her sporty skirt, then looked up and forced a bright smile. "But Mommy is super awesome! She runs super fast!"

Listening to her daughter, Giselle felt like a knife was twisting in her gut.

Hank looked into Gigi's eyes—eyes trying so desperately to hide her sadness—and stayed quiet for a second before softly saying, "It really does sound amazing. I never got to do anything like that when I was little. Honestly, I'm a little jealous."

Gigi's eyes lit up again. She desperately wanted to invite him, but sensing that her mother didn't really like this man, she hesitated, chewing her lip, unsure if she was allowed to ask.

Seeing her conflict, Hank took the initiative. "Could I come?"
