Giselle instinctively glanced at Hank. "Mom, no."
"But Myles told me you were with him!" Emma complained, clearly getting a headache just from mentioning Hank's name. "Don't ruin a perfectly good connection with Myles just to fall back into his trap."
Giselle sighed. "Mom, I'm on a business trip right now. Can we talk about this when I get back?"
"I know Myles is a Yarnwick City local. If he offers to spend time with you, don't turn him down. Do you hear me? Feelings can be nurtured!" Emma pressed on, her tone turning pleading. "Don't go down that old, painful path again. I'm just terrified you're going to get your heart broken all over again."
"I know," Giselle replied softly.
As she hung up, Chloe sat frozen in the back seat, barely daring to breathe. The previously relaxed atmosphere inside the car had instantly turned suffocating. Hank still had a faint smirk on his lips, but his eyes were completely devoid of warmth.
Giselle remained silent for a long moment before finally saying, "My mom is just worried about me."
"She has every right to be," Hank replied evenly. "Her hatred toward me is justified. I was a terrible person to you."
Giselle turned her head, staring blankly out the window.
They visited two more factories in succession. Having gathered enough information, Giselle decided to call it a day as the sky began to darken. Hank turned the car around to head back.
The rain had lightened slightly, but the conditions were treacherous. The narrow, muddy mountain roads were slick and unstable. Even though Hank was driving with extreme caution, the SUV still skidded occasionally. Fortunately, his exceptional driving skills carried them through safely, and they made it to the base of the mountain in one piece.
That evening, the three of them found a local fondue restaurant in town for dinner. When they returned to the hotel, the receptionist called out to Giselle and handed her a gift bag.
"This is for you. Um, a boyfriend dropped it off," the receptionist said, darting nervous glances at Hank.
Giselle took the bag. It contained some of Yarnwick City's famous local pastries and a handwritten apology letter from Myles.
Seeing the elegant penmanship on the envelope, Chloe couldn't help but marvel, "It's so rare to find someone who still writes actual letters in this day and age."
Hank scoffed lightly. "It's just a cheap trick to impress naive girls."
"Let's just get some rest," Giselle said, ending the conversation.
The next morning, Giselle and Chloe headed downstairs as usual, planning to grab a quick bite before hitting the road for more factory tours.
To their surprise, Myles's car was parked right out front again. This time, he came prepared. Walking up to her with a takeout bag, he smiled warmly. "My mom baked some fresh breakfast pastries and made some hot oatmeal this morning. I thought you might like to try some."
Deep down, Giselle didn't think Myles had done anything objectively wrong. But the one thing that deeply annoyed her was his habit of dragging their parents into their private affairs.
