Lyra continued smoothly, "I have a job opportunity. I heard you're in the IT industry, and our company is currently looking for..."
York listened to her pitch, gave a polite nod, and pulled out his phone to scan her code.
His coworker, deeply annoyed by the entire situation, interrupted. "Hold on a second, lady. You're trying to recruit this guy? Have you even looked at how pathetic he is?"
Maddie, thoroughly irritated by the disrespect, marched over to stand beside her best friend. "The only thing he's using that 'pathetic' vibe for is digging a grave for your career," she shot back sarcastically.
The coworker's face darkened. "What company do you two even work for? You're probably just running some scam."
"I'm Lyra Fairchild from Fairchild Holdings," Lyra declared smoothly, extending her hand toward York.
Who in Seaborne City hadn't heard of Fairchild Holdings?
Aside from the Jameson Group, Fairchild Holdings was a dominating force in the corporate world, infinitely better than their no-name startup that lacked both funding and resources.
"Come on, York. The job market is terrible right now. You don't actually believe she's from Fairchild Holdings, do you?"
"If you're interested, we can head over to Fairchild Holdings right now for a tour," Lyra offered, completely ignoring the haters. She casually flagged down a waiter and handed him a sleek black card. "I'll cover this table's bill. Go ahead and run it."
"Right away, Miss Fairchild."
The waiter clearly recognized her and respectfully hurried off to process the payment.
Lyra turned her attention back to York. "Mr. Somerset, are you willing to come with me right now?"
York decided it was time to be practical.
He hated his current job at the startup anyway.
The pay was garbage, the workload was absurd, and he was harassed on a daily basis.
Now that a golden opportunity was sitting right in front of him, he was more than willing to take a gamble.
"Let's go," he agreed.
Lyra felt like she had just won the lottery.
Her emotions had been a wild rollercoaster over the past few days, but this was a massive win.
Lyra felt a brief pang of disappointment, but she knew it was only a matter of time. Once they started working together, they would inevitably become best friends again.
Pushing the thought aside, Lyra clapped her hands to get the room's attention. "Listen up, everyone! We have a new algorithm developer joining us today. This is York Somerset, and he'll be working closely with the team moving forward."
"His technical skills are just as incredible as Quentin's."
The R&D staff immediately started teasing her. "You have great taste, Miss Fairchild. Every time you recruit someone, they're not only a genius but also incredibly good-looking."
Laughter echoed across the floor.
Some of the developers were already calling him "York."
Lyra took the jokes in stride, smiling warmly at York. "Find an empty desk you like and get comfortable with the environment."
"Quentin," Lyra turned back to the chief engineer. "York is new, so take a look at what tasks would suit him best and handle his assignments."
She was in such a fantastic mood today that her smiles were entirely genuine.
Quentin gave a brief nod, signaling he had no objections.
