Maddie hooked her arm through Leo's as they stepped off the elevator. Just as their feet hit the floor, her gaze landed squarely on a familiar figure ahead—Elara Townsend, Jasmine's cousin.
Maddie's eyes narrowed. She tugged at Leo's sleeve and lowered her voice. "Look. Jasmine's family is here."
"Let's go check it out."
The two stealthily followed and managed to casually ask the nurses' station, discovering that Jasmine had also been involved in a serious car accident.
When they peeked into Jasmine's room, they were shocked to see how severely injured she was. She looked frail and utterly exhausted.
From a distance, Maddie watched as Rowan gently lifted a frail-looking Jasmine onto a medical gurney, seemingly prepping her for a round of tests.
A fiery wave of anger erupted in Maddie's chest. Acting on pure instinct, she whipped out her phone to snap a picture of the sickening scene.
Catching her movement, Leo immediately grabbed her arm and dragged her away from the ward.
"Why wouldn't you let me take a picture?" Maddie snapped, shaking off his grip once they were outside.
"Snapping photos of people secretly is a bad idea," Leo cautioned. "It's an easy way to stir up trouble."
Maddie's eyes flashed with utter disgust. "Rowan is such a manipulative piece of trash. Lyra was absolutely right. He only forced his way into her life to make Jasmine jealous. He's a sick bastard torturing Lyra for his own twisted games."
"James wasn't spoon-feeding her soup, though," Leo pointed out.
"He showered her with millions of dollars in jewelry and luxury cars!" Maddie argued. "Any of that is worth a hell of a lot more than a bowl of soup."
A pang of regret gnawed at her. "I honestly thought that if we let them hash things out, Lyra might actually steal him away. As long as his heart wasn't with Jasmine, Jasmine would end up with nothing. But now..."
Unable to contain her explosive emotions, Maddie quickly opened her messages and fired off a text to Lyra.
[Whatever you do, don't fall for him.]
[That scumbag's girlfriend, Jasmine, is in this exact hospital. I just saw him holding her, looking incredibly cozy.]
