Chapter 57

Chapter 57

After the dinner wrapped up, the group departed from the Chavez residence.

Lyra drove Caleb’s car.

Caleb, having had a few drinks, slouched lazily in the passenger seat. The neon city lights flickered across his sharp features.

He watched his sister drive and suddenly spoke up. “Did you get body-snatched or something? You never used to be this good at driving. I used to be terrified of getting in a car with you.”

Lyra jumped slightly, then laughed. “People grow up, you know.”

“Also,” Caleb continued, “Dad wants to know how you figured out those people were embezzling. It’s weird. You haven’t even been at the company that long.”

He hadn’t really thought deeply about it before.

It was only when Arthur mentioned it that Caleb realized how strange it was.

The whole situation didn’t quite add up.

And that inconsistency, brought up by their father, suddenly clicked-

Lyra had only been working for a few days. How did she uncover the corruption so quickly?

Lyra couldn’t explain the truth, so she shrugged. “It came to me in a dream.”

Caleb fell silent for a moment, staring at Lyra’s profile as she kept her eyes glued to the road. “Do I look like an idiot to you?”

“Believe what you want,” Lyra snapped back defensively. She knew that if she acted angry, Caleb would drop it.

Sure enough, he didn’t press the issue.

Caleb genuinely couldn’t figure it out.

But he wasn’t the type to obsess over things, either.

Seeing that Lyra was getting upset, he let it go.

“Kayla Harrington heard about what you did and wants to meet you. She thinks my sister is pretty incredible.”

Lyra paused.

An image flashed in her mind-Kayla, heavily pregnant, her face ashen as she trudged through the thick snow…

“What’s wrong?” Caleb asked, noticing her expression darken. “It’s just dinner. Why do you look so serious?”

“Don’t tell me my fearless sister is actually intimidated by Kayla?”

“I might need to rethink this…”

“After all, you’re the princess of this family. I don’t want to bring someone into the house who makes you uncomfortable, even if she’s going to be my wife.”

Lyra snapped back to reality. “What are you talking about!”

She gripped the steering wheel and shot Caleb a glare that screamed “idiot”. “Mama’s boys are annoying enough, but a brother who’s obsessed with his sister is just gross!”

“You should take a page out of Rowan’s book, Caleb. He only treats his woman well and treats everyone else like dirt, even his own parents…”

Caleb didn’t know whether to laugh or cry.

Especially after receiving that glare from Lyra.

Why did that look make him feel like she wasn’t his sister, and Kayla was her real sibling?

From sending gifts without even meeting her, to defending her now.

Lyra seemed exceptionally satisfied with Kayla.

“If people didn’t know better, they’d think Kayla was your blood relative.”

Lyra chuckled. “Once you two get married, she will be family.”

“So, are we meeting up?” Caleb asked.

Lyra thought for a moment. “Just invite her over to the house for dinner. A family dinner is better. Mom and Dad can meet her with us.”

Caleb blinked, taken aback. That was a big step.

Usually, you only brought someone home for a formal dinner if marriage was a sure thing.

He felt he hadn’t spent enough time dating Kayla yet.

They were nowhere near that stage.

“We’ll see,” Caleb deflected, playing for time.

Lyra quietly drove the rest of the way home.

Once back in her room, she gave Caspian Jameson a call to exchange holiday greetings.

Caspian was currently out celebrating the holiday with Maisie Sutton.
