Chapter 56
Chapter 56
Fortunately, Leo Chavez hadn’t fully invested in the used car market yet; it was still in the negotiation phase.
He could back out whenever he wanted.
As the hot dishes were served one by one, the group started eating. Leo quickly forgot about his grandfather’s favoritism. After a few rounds of drinks, he pulled out his phone to show Lyra and Maddie pictures of his new girlfriend. He bragged about how smart he was for keeping his identity as the heir to the Chavez Group a secret…
He claimed that a woman who stayed with him when he was broke was a good woman.
“Leo,” Lyra patted his shoulder gently. “Well…”
She didn’t say the rest out loud: “That woman thought you were broke, so she ended up hooking up with your dad.”
Lyra tugged at her long hair in frustration. Was that something she could even say? Knowing too much wasn’t always a good thing.
Lucas Chavez was in the middle of a drink. He turned, caught Lyra’s little gesture, and let out a cough. “Look,” he mocked. “Lyra is pulling her own hair out to stop herself from rushing over to Rowan…”
Waylon Grayson heard this and glanced over at Lyra.
She was frowning, tugging at her long hair, looking genuinely troubled.
Even though she usually kept up a cold front these days, she still showed flashes of childishness every now and then.
Waylon chuckled.
Hearing Lucas’s remark, Rowan Jameson merely cast a faint glance at Lyra, a slight frown touching his features as if something had crossed his mind.
Then his phone rang. He gave Silas Chavez a polite nod, stood up, and stepped outside to take the
call.
As Rowan left, Mr. Chavez couldn’t help but sigh in admiration. Rowan had just secured the Southside Redevelopment Project. He was a terrifyingly capable young man, making the older generation look obsolete. Silas only wished Rowan was his own biological grandson.
The Graysons expressed their genuine envy as well.
Mr. Chavez had a booming voice. His words carried clearly over to Lyra’s table.
A young woman in a toggle coat looked over with pure adoration. “Can I ask Rowan for a marriage of
convenience?”
The girl sitting next to her scoffed. “Why would someone that rich need a marriage of convenience? Does he look like he needs your money? He’s definitely holding out for true love.”
Lyra froze.

See? Even young girls understood that simple truth.
In her past life, she hadn’t.
It didn’t take long for Rowan to return from his call. He offered a toast to Mr. Chavez, who beamed, his eyes full of absolute approval.
Lyra guessed he would be leaving soon. He had to spend the festival with Jasmine Ford.
Sure enough, Rowan excused himself shortly after.
Mr. Chavez patted him on the shoulder and personally walked him to the door.
As soon as Rowan was gone, Maddie leaned into Lyra’s ear. “Mr. Chavez didn’t invite Jasmine to an event like this. She really isn’t presentable enough yet. She can only try to compete with you from the
shadows.”
Lyra offered a soft smile.
She had thought the exact same thing in her previous life.
She used to smugly think she was Rowan’s one and only fiancée, only to have reality slap her in the
face.
It wouldn’t be long before Rowan officially announced Jasmine as his girlfriend.
At that moment, Lucas whispered something in Mr. Chavez’s ear. Mr. Chavez called Leo back over.
Lucas then walked over to Leo’s empty seat and sat down.
As soon as he settled in, Lyra subtly shifted closer to Maddie.
Lucas noted her reaction and frowned. “You had plenty to say to Leo. Why the silent treatment now?”
Before she could answer, Mr. Chavez called him away again.
Once he was gone, Maddie rolled her eyes. “Is Lucas out of his mind? Why does he always have to throw jabs at you? Did you do something to offend him?”
Lyra shook her head. “Let’s just eat.”
A few minutes later, it was Maddie and Lyra’s turn to offer toasts at the elders’ table.
When Lyra walked over, the Graysons, Chavezes, and Vances were all smiles, exchanging pleasantries.
But they were all shrewd people. They saw everything that happened at the dinner. Until Rowan left, Lyra hadn’t spoken a single word to him.
The marriage between the Jameson and Fairchild families was likely going up in smoke.
