Sabrina Vance was also there when she met up with Madeline.
Lyra Fairchild still couldn't fathom how Leo Chavez and Madeline had suddenly ended up engaged.
Madeline scooped up a spoonful of Häagen-Dazs ice cream. "My family's company is going under."
"The real estate market is tanking."
"My mom is desperate to marry me off before our finances are completely drained. Bluntly put, she's looking for a sucker to bail us out."
"Looking around, Leo was the most suitable candidate left. So, she started inviting him over for dinner every day. The funny thing is, I think he genuinely just loves our private chef's cooking. Whenever my mom calls, he actually shows up."
Both Sabrina and Lyra exchanged looks of sheer disbelief.
Madeline shrugged. "Leo seems fine with marrying just about anyone. You both know he doesn't have much of a backbone."
"He probably figured that if someone as powerful as his cousin ended up married off like that, what difference does it make? A wife is a wife."
Lyra's face paled. She lowered her head in silence, absently stirring her dessert.
Sabrina didn't buy that excuse for a second. "Would he really marry you if you didn't force his hand?"
"I swear I didn't," Madeline protested.
"And he didn't insist on it?" Sabrina pressed.
Madeline faltered for a moment. "What are you talking about?"
"I'm talking about basic anatomy," Sabrina quipped, a wicked gleam in her eye. "Would he propose if he wasn't thinking with what's between his legs? You must have seduced him somehow. If he just wanted the food, he would have simply poached your chef."
