Chapter 66

Chapter 66

Rowan Jameson’s expression remained entirely indifferent. It was clear he couldn’t care less whether she considered them friends or not.

Jasmine Ford spoke in a soft, placating tone. “Don’t force it, Rosalie. Let’s not make things difficult for Lyra…”

“You’re just way too nice!” Rosalie West scoffed. “Lyra, unless you’re finally ready to admit that you’re still hopelessly hung up on Mr. Jameson, what gives you the right to give Jasmine attitude and treat her like she doesn’t exist?”

Lyra almost laughed out loud.

People with enough life experience had learned to maintain a perfectly civil facade in public, even when they had completely severed ties with someone in their hearts.

Most real fallouts happened in total silence.

They certainly weren’t broadcast across a dinner table.

Jasmine actually understood this social rule perfectly, which was exactly why she had tried to stop Rosalie from bringing it up.

“Who I choose to befriend is my own business, isn’t it?”

Lyra had barely finished her sentence when her phone rang.

Seeing it was a call from the HR Manager, Mr. Whittaker, Lyra answered immediately.

“Miss Fairchild, that Quentin Pierce you specifically asked about is here for an interview.”

Lyra froze.

In her previous life, Fairchild Enterprises had been absolutely crushed by their competitors because their technology was severely outdated. To combat this, Lyra had recently hiked up the salary offerings for tech roles in hopes of poaching some of the brilliant minds that would eventually build the Jameson Group’s empire. But after months of recruitment, she had heard nothing.

Until today.

Lyra bit her lip, suppressing a massive wave of excitement. Keeping her voice completely neutral, she said, “Send me a photo of him right now.”

She had sifted through countless resumes lately, and none had belonged to Rowan’s former heavy hitters. There was always a chance this was just someone with the same name.

While she waited for the text, Rosalie spoke up again. “I heard you’re actually working at Fairchild Enterprises now?”

Lyra didn’t even bother looking up. “Are you on dial-up internet? You’re just hearing about this now?”

“Why pretend to be some corporate intellectual?” Rosalie sneered. “Just go back to playing your mobile games all day. Your dad only keeps you around as the company mascot anyway.”

“Whether I work, or how I choose to do it, is none of your concern.”

At that moment, Rowan frowned slightly.

In the past, Lyra had always cared desperately about her image and would never dream of getting into a petty argument in front of him. But now-

Lyra waited anxiously until Mr. Whittaker’s message came through. One glance at the photo, and she knew it was definitely the Quentin Pierce.

Lyra quickly typed a reply: [Keep him there! Do not let him leave!]

Firing off the text, she grabbed her designer bag without skipping a beat. Leo Chavez had just finished a phone call and walked back in. She looked at him and said, “Sorry Leo, something urgent came up and I have to go. What time is your flight tomorrow? I’ll come see you off.”

“You don’t need to do that, Lyra. I’ve got plenty of people sending me off. But, uh, it’s at three in the afternoon.”

Lyra gave him a warm smile. Without waiting to see anyone else’s reaction, she stood up and walked right out the door.

Lucas Chavez sat there, completely stunned. Waylon Grayson looked just as shocked.

When had she ever left an event early while Rowan was still there?

Rowan was sitting right at the table, and she had just walked out without a second glance.

Had Lyra actually let him go?!

Once the door clicked shut behind her, Lucas blurted out, “Damn, Lyra is really playing hard to get these days.”

Then, Rowan finally spoke up. “Lucas, where exactly did you find this girlfriend of yours?”

His tone was lazy, as if he were just asking casually.

Lucas stiffened. He knew Rowan well enough to know he didn’t ask questions just to make conversation; it was a clear warning that Rosalie was way too loud and that he needed to dump her immediately.

But back when Lyra used to follow him around chattering endlessly, Rowan never seemed to find it this annoying!

Completely clueless to the tension, Rosalie smiled brightly. “Oh, Lucas and I actually met at the movie theater! We realized we were going to see the same film, and I had no idea he was a fan of—”

Lucas grabbed Rosalie’s arm, giving her a sharp tug that signaled her to shut up.

Jasmine’s fingers tightened slightly in her lap. Recovering quickly, she picked up a piece of food and placed it on Rowan’s plate, acting entirely unbothered. “This dish is amazing.”

Rowan accepted the gesture, and said nothing more.
