Shit. I smash a fist against the steering wheel as I pull through the gates of my estate. It doesn’t make any sense, but it’s my current reality. The thief was Jeremy. He stole the briefcase from Baxter. But how the hell did it end up in Reign Moretti’s hands? Why would Reign hold onto it and use it like that?

The moment Jeremy saw me at Jennifer’s apartment, recognition…and fear flashed in his eyes. He knows exactly who I am. These questions aren’t going to answer themselves, and it’s pissing me off that this mess has anything to do with me. All I did was try to protect a customer, find his stolen property, and make sure the thief was dealt with. I didn’t ask for this domino effect. Yet here I am, stuck between the fact that I used to sleep with Jenna and I’m the reason Jennifer’s father is lying in a hospital bed.

I didn’t order those gangsters to burn the convenience store, but my men did. Because I told them to find the thief and send a message. I just never asked who the thief was connected to.

An hour ago, Jennifer was telling me I wasn’t a “bad guy.” But I am exactly that. It hasn’t even been a month or a fresh week of our new relationship but I’ve already brought this kind of hell to her doorstep.

She’s never going to forgive me.

I bang the steering wheel again and slam on the brakes as I see someone waiting at the inner gate…someone I absolutely did not invite. Security is already approaching my car. I don’t get out. I just roll the window down and stare to hear him.

“Sir, she’s been here for the last twenty minutes. We’ve been trying to get her to turn back, as she has no appointment.” the guard says.

It’s Jenna. Of course it is. She’s walking toward my car from her own, dressed in denim shorts so short that are showing her ass and a corseted top that puts her cleavage to the rim. Her hair is piled up, and she’s smiling in her signature red lips.

My mood, already black, curdles into something venomous. Seeing Jennifer cry like that… it tore something open in me I didn’t know I had. If she ever finds out I’m the one who caused it, she’ll look at me like I’m a monster. And she’d be right.

“What.”

“I wanted to speak to you.” She leans down, resting her arms on my windowsill, putting her pierced boobs deliberate display.

“We have nothing to talk about.”

“Are you having a bad day or something-”

“I’m having a much worse one now that your tits are in my face!” I snap and frown.

She pouts. “You used to squeeze them real nice…”

my head and shut my eyes for a second with disgust rolling through me. What the hell is this?

“Fine. Don’t let me in. Maybe I’ll just call Jennifer and let her know that you and I used to fuck. And not just that, but that I was the one who took dangerous Harvey’s virginity. I taught him how to make love. I gave him his first… everything. Oral. I was the first one he rode, all while you still had her in your heart. Do you think your little Jennifer will be able to take that?”

She chuckles because she can see it’s working. The vein throbbing in my temple tells her. She’s found the pressure point, and she’s digging her nail right into it.

“I won’t stop there, baby. I’ll also tell her that you burnt her dad’s store, chased her brother into hiding…who, by the way, sold the docs to my brother… Don’t you want to know how Reign got a hold of it? Invite me in, Harv.”

Her words are poison and they work. I start the engine of my car again. I do want to know. I need to know how deep this rot goes. I just look at the security guard at my gatehouse and give a nod. He tells her, “Right this way, ma’am. Come in.”

I gun the engine, curving past her car as I pull into the underground bay of my penthouse. Elio is at the entrance when I return, and his usually impassive face registers pure surprise. He was expecting me to still be at Jen’s place, or at the casino. His eyes widen further when he sees the vixen following close behind me.

The robot…which is a self-navigating helper unit that cleans and fetches things rolls up to greet us at the inner door.

“Welcome, Grim Reaper.” it says in its flat, robotic voice.

I scoff silently. It always changes my name, calling me something different every time.

“Oh, it’s a little robot!” Jenna coos from behind me.

“Congratulations on getting your high school love. Hurray!” It sprays a pathetic burst of digital confetti across its screen. With one hand in my pocket, I walk past it.

“Stupid robot.” Jenna hisses.

“Can I get you anything, ma’am?” Elio asks her.

“I would love some-”

“She won’t be here for long,” I cut her off. I take the stairs two at a time up to room which I haven’t spent real time in for ages, and she follows after me like a persistent shadow.

“Harvey, your home is sick. It looks totally your style. Grimy, grim reaper personality. I love it.” Jenna squeals, as if I brought her here for a tour. When we pass the gaming room, I note the new tennis table installed after Baxter and his crew destroyed the last one.

“Reign and Jeremy. How do they know each other?” I walk straight into my closet and start taking off my wristwatch. From the reflection in the smoked glass, I see her lay back on my bed as if she owns it.

“I’m not sure. Probably work.”

“He stole a briefcase from my club and was supposed to give it to Baxter. Why did he give it to Reign instead?” I pull a hoodie from a hanger and begin unbuttoning my shirt, methodically.

“Hmm… because he’s afraid of you. And he wanted it off his hands, I guess. Plus, Baxter wasn’t giving him the money he needed for the job, especially after your men destroyed his convenience store. My brother offered a higher amount to build the shop back, so he deviated.” She pauses..

“What are you going to do to Jeremy? I’ve heard you are quite ruthless to those who steal from you.”

I shuck my pants now off and toss my shirt onto a bench. I can feel her eyes on me.

“Does your Jennifer know how to handle all that body?”

I don’t answer. I’ve gotten the information I wanted from her. Now all she is noise. A buzzing, irritating fly.

“At least say something,” she pouts, starting to get up and come toward me.

“You said you wanted to speak to me. I’ve gotten the information I want from you.” I turn to face her, pulling a tight-fitting tank before the hoodie. “Can you get out? Now?”

“Ugh, so handsome, even when you’re rude to me.” her red lips curving in a pout. “Where have you been? If you’re just coming home now, that means you weren’t here?”

“I was with my girlfriend. How many times do I have to make it clear that we are over?”

“Break

I scoff.
