Chapter 49

Jennifer Marie.

One. Two Cut the cake!

We all cheer as Max slices into it, surrounded by staff of the casino holding sparkly sign with his name. I dag along with the team, but my eyes are wandering also, taking in the chaos of the casino. It’s literally a different planes

Golden light washes over everything, bouncing off a thousand blinking machines. Before we first walked in, I tipped my head back so far I heard my neck crack to look at the skyscraper building Everything was just gold. Towers of i And the biggest sign I’ve ever seen in my life, screaming KINGS CASINO

This place is huge. No wonder he’s in Forbes. It’s like heaven on earth for people who don’t know how to hold onto their wallet. Super classy, too. Sure, there are some dancing strippers but there are also women draped in fors and killer heels, wealthy types parked at tables surrounded by racks and racks of actual cash.

It’s beautiful and insane. There’s people performing, singing, and there’s real food lobster, caviar, fancy wine took just alcohol. But I’m scanning the crowd for Harvey. The second I spot David giving orders on the main floor. I slip away from

the team.

“Jennifer?” He sees me coming.

“Hey,”

“Looking for Harvey?”

“Yeah. Is he in?”

“Should be in his office. Usually he’d have come down by now. David checks his watch. “He’s probably just resting. Maybe you should give him a minute.”

While he’s talking, I see Harvey.

The moment his foot hits the casino floor, it’s like a magnet goes off. A group of guests jumps up to shake his hand. David stops talking, seeing I’m not listening. All across the room, guys old, young are pointing, whispering, and getting in line for their turn with him. I’m mesmerized. Is this why he freaked when I said I was coming? This… fan club? This doesn’t seem so

bad.

I’m still kinda smiling until I see a young woman with perfect waves glides up, tugs his arm in a way that’s way too familiar and literally pulls him across the floor. I squint. Who… is she?

“Um, thanks.” I mumble to David and walk past him, following them.

My pink sequin dress feels suddenly too bright, my matching heels too loud on the tiles. I round the corner where I saw them disappear and my throat just… closes.

It’s a small, plush room. And it’s full of women. Like, a galaxy of women, in the skimpiest outfits I’ve ever seen sequins feathers, barely-there lingerie in every color. And they’re all talking to Harvey.

“What?” Harvey asks, sounding tired.

“David wasn’t here to manage us for two weeks.” one says, her chest practically spilling out of her bra. I want to roll my eyes so hard. “He left Sinclair in charge. That idiot didn’t pay us.”

“Yeah, and Sinclair only fed us once a day,” another chimes in, puting. “He’s a total douche-face. We’re owed, boss”

“I’ll call him to my office.” Harvey says, rubbing his temple

“Thank you. Daddy!” The one in a leopard-print robe which she not even bothering to tie purrs. Daddy? My brain bends. Why is she so…. comfortable being basically naked in front of him?

Okay, maybe I’m overthinking. Harvey and I talked about this. Is business. Normal for the business. That’s what he said.

“Are you gonna give us a bonus? We kept the casino running…” a woman with a sharp, pretty face asks, putting a hand on h arm. I feel sick just watching. Even if he’s not doing anything back, it’s just… ugh.

“Bonus for all of you, then.”

They start squealing, jumping, clapping. One of them, bouncing around, bumps the door and sees me standing there. I quickly clear my face and throat to try to look casual, like I was just staring daggers and as if I just arrived here.

“Harvey?” My voice comes out weirdly bright.

He turns, and his eyes find me. “Hey.”

I force a huge smile, anything to unlock my jaw and make the tight, hot feeling in my chest go away.

“Who is she, your girlfriend? She’s pretty.” The one who called him Daddy says, and a chorus of agreement awwn goes around her.

Harvey doesn’t even answer. He just walks out of the room, his hand finding mine, and pulls me with him. My heart is doing a weird tap-dance against my ribs. We end up in a private elevator, and when the doors slide shut, the casino’s noise vanishes.

I look at him. There’s something off. A tension in his shoulders that wasn’t there a day ago. Now that the whole family is back, did something happen? Are they bothering him?

“Are you okay?” I ask.

“Yeah, I’m fine.” He leans back against the wall. “How was work?”

“Alright. We’ve got a bunch of new clients already. I guess the Prescott wedding is doing numbers for us.” I try for a light tone. “Thank you for hiring me.”

He gives me a half-smile, just one corner of his mouth lifting, and it doesn’t reach his eyes. The elevator dings open. He steps out first, and I follow, watching the rigid line of his back as he leads me into his office.

My mouth falls open as I enter.

It’s huge. All leather and dark wood, and from this height, the whole of Manhattan is spread out like a glittering black velvet sheet studded with diamonds. A massive business table dominates the room, with a detailed model of the Kings Casino on it. Harvey is already at a side bar, quietly pouring himself a drink.

“Are you hungry? I can order something here.”

“No, I’m fine,” I say, walking toward him. The view is insane, but can’t stop looking at him. “You seem moody.”

“Just tired. Also, I’m handling the stalker thing. It won’t bother you again.” His voice is flat but I believe him.

“What about the people who did it to my dad?”

“I’ll find out.”

I soften my voice, stepping closer. “If you’re tired, just go home uh? Do you have to be here?”

“No. Not really” He says it, but his hand goes to his forearm, ruling it absently. My brows furrow. What’s up with that hand?
