Jennifer is seated on my lap after what we just did. I didn’t finish with her on her knees. Lended up pulling her into my lap. and making out with her until she was moaning softly against my mouth. Now, with her head resting on my chest in my office chair. I’m staring at her fingers where they’re clutching my shirt. She looks right up at me.
“My dad knows you.”
“What!?” I ask.
Can I ever just look at her without my own bullshit resurfacing?
“How?”
“After my mom divorced him, he used to watch me come home from school. He knew she’d banned him from seeing me. He said he saw us walk home together a few times.”
“Wow,” I say. Yeah, wow. From my perspective, that’s a goddamn nightmare.
“I want you to meet him. He seemed like the only person excited to get to know you, since he already sort of does. As for my mom… we should take our time with her. She’s judgey. Even of me.” Jennifer adjusts, seating herself directly on the line of my greed. She puts a hand on the desk and arches her back-you know, exactly the way I had her just minutes ago, when I pushed her hair away from her neck and drove into her, skin against skin.
“So, shall we?” She looks back at me, and I have to snap out of the thought, even though we just finished.
“You… you mean now?” I blink.
“Of course. You said you weren’t busy.” She gets up, and I let my eyes drop to her ass, seeking a moment of distraction.
“Harvey, stop looking at my ass.” She chuckles.
“I’m obsessed with you. Forgive me.” I stand, and the way she bites her lip… if she doesn’t want me to take her right here again, she probably shouldn’t do that.
“So, the hospital?” I ask, trying to focus.
“No, at his house. He’s staying with my brother Jeremy. Well, Jeremy is staying there for now. You can meet him, too.” This is the point where I want to cry. Where I want to fucking dig my hand into the wall. Instead, Jennifer begins adjusting her hair and her clothes. I grab my keys, and we head back downstairs.
“All ready?” Tinka says, hopping up from where she was perched near one of the casino floors. She has a feather headdress on and quickly pulls it off. “Is Harvey coming?”
“Yeah,” Jennifer replies, taking my hand.
“You guys look freaking cute.” Tinka grins.
“You know, we could look like that too,” Nate shoots his shot, and it’s pathetic.
“Aww, you’re cute!” Tinka tells him before skipping away.
“Ouch.” Jennifer whispers, touches Nate on his shoulder and the joins her friend to leave.
“Help me.” I breathe the moment they’re out of earshot. Nate looks at me.

“Jennifer wants me to meet her dad. I couldn’t say no. I already told her I wasn’t busy, thinking we were just going to spend the whole day banging.”
“Oh,” Nate says.
“You don’t have any ideas?”
“I don’t think the old man knows you had a hand in it.”
“Yeah, but the brother-“I rub my hand over my face. You know what? Screw it. I’m going to face this. It doesn’t matter. I’ll smile at the man, use the opportunity to speak to Jeremy, and let him know exactly the hell he’s caused.
I meet the girls outside and have one of my valets take Jennifer’s car back to her apartment so I can drive us. It’s about a thirty-minute drive. When we get there, Tinka rushes in like she’s been here a hundred times. But before Jennifer and I can follow, her brother Jeremy comes out.
One look at me, and he can’t even hide the paleness in his face. He knows me. And he stole from me. Let’s not forget that. Hopefully, Jennifer doesn’t notice it too much.
“Uh, you didn’t tell me you were coming,” Jeremy says, his voice tight.
“Since when do I have to tell you?” Jennifer fires back.
“Since you decided to visit?” He’s looking at me even as he speaks to her. What he means is that she should have warned him so he could have run-so he wouldn’t have to stand here looking guilty. I get it.
“Um, this is Harvey.” Jennifer turns to me with a bright smile. “You guys met, but it wasn’t exactly how I would have wanted you to meet.”
“Hi, I’m Harvey.” I extend my hand for a handshake. He looks at me like I’ve grown a second head before reluctantly taking
“Jeremy.”
His grip is weak but I take it. Then I release it.
“Sorry we had to meet that way,” I say. “I have a younger sister too, and I’d be damned if I ever met a guy in her room like
that.”
He doesn’t smile. “Why is he here?” he asks Jennifer directly, ignoring me.
“Don’t be rude.”
“I’m just asking-
“I brought him to meet Dad, not you. Dad knows him.” Jennifer moves to go inside, but I place a gentle hand on her arm.
“Jen, can I talk to him for a moment?”
She hesitates, then nods, “Yeah. Meet me inside.” She gives her other a warning look before stepping onto the porch and disappearing into the house.
Now it’s just him and me. The mask of civility drops.
“What do you think you’re doing here?” He steps closer
I don’t move an inch “Now, be careful Remember why you were so scared when you found out it was my casino you stole

from? That fear that made you rush to get the briefcase out of your hand? Let that feeling stand between us right now.”
“You put my father in the hospital, and now you’re dating my sier!?”
“You put your father in the hospital, and I’m dating your sister. That’s the correct version. You stole. And then you hid. And then you sold it.” I enunciate each point slowly, letting the accusation hang in the air. He and Baxter are the same….they love to throw the stone but hide their hands.
His jaw tightens, a muscle ticks.
“It was your brother-”
“Yeah. And do you think if I’d known the petty person who hired you was my brother, I wouldn’t have fucking chased you? You’re a fucking thief. The chain starts with you.”
His bravado wavers. “Regardless, if my sister finds out-”
“She will find out.” I cut him off, my voice flat and certain.
“What are you talking about?”
“You collected money from your friend Reign who just happens to be my enemy and gave him the briefcase. What do you think an enemy does with that kind of leverage?” I take a half-step forward, and he instinctively leans back. “He’s already started sending Jen secretive messages, asking if she wants to know who really hurt her dad. Do you think for one moment he won’t use it?”
“Reign is my friend.” he insists, but it sounds hollow, even to him
I give him a cold, pitying smile. “Reign is my enemy. Which one do you think is stronger?”
I leave him standing there, pale and speechless, with that question hanging in the air. Then I turn and walk into the house to meet Jennifer’s father.
