After Harvey’s, I just… there’s so much anger I don’t know what to do with. Me and Reign. Really? For some reason, he thinks I’ll just give myself to Reign…someone I don’t even know-to get back at him?
I shut the door to the downstairs workspace in the store to finish Jenna’s dresses for the soiree. I want them done. I never want to see her as a customer in my life again. The workspace is in the basement. To focus, I left my phone upstairs the moment I saw Dad calling me. I swear, I just want to get rid of this part and do nothing else.
So for the next… who knows…. six hours, I finally iron, steam, and press every last detail. I add the final embellishments, Check every seam, and carefully pack each piece into their respective designer garment bags. My fingers are literally cramping. My neck is screaming. I don’t have coffee anymore, but I should probably quit that anyway.
I take a nap for the next hour. It’s actually amazing how well one hour of sleep can reset you.
I carry the packaged outfits upstairs. When I reach the main floor. I see everyone…..Alexa, Brooke, Max, the other assistants running around like headless chickens. They freeze when I walk through the reception area, all of them looking like they’re having a collective panic attack.
“It’s 8 p.m. Where the hell were you!?” Alexa shrieks.
“We thought you disappeared into thin air or something!”
“Downstairs. In the workshop. Finishing the dresses.” I look at them flatly. “Did none of you think to check there?”
“Duh. Maybe if you picked up your phone?”
“The client… Miss Moretti is here for her next freaking consultation.” Max presses his hand to his forehead like he’s about to expire.
“Consultation? Good thing I’m done with the dresses.” I lift the heavy bags and my arms ache from the weight. I quickly set them on the reception counter.
“Done… with a D?” Flora’s eyes go wide.
“You left your phone in the office. One.” Alexa ticks off on her fingers. “Two, we thought you left to get fabrics in the morning that’s why we’ve been searching for you for the past two hours!”
Brooke snorts from the corner.
I exhale slowly. Getting fabrics was what I was going to do originally, before my car started overheating. But that’s beside the point.
Alexa starts checking the garment bags. She looks at me in shock “They’re literally so beautiful. Miss Moretti was supposed to have at least three more days of consultations, and you’re done with the dresses? You must really hate her.”
“I do. Where is she? Our contract has come to an end.”
“Your knee is bruised-”
“Just a scratch.”
“You know this is so unprofessional, right?” Brooke folds her arm with her signature sneer in place. “You’re always late to consultations. We always have to make excuses for you and search for you?“

“On a perfect day with perfect clients, I would feel guilty. But I hate Jenna and Nisha, and I’ve been as professional as I can possibly be.”
I walk past Brooke toward where I think Jenna might be waiting Yeah, that one-hour nap did keep her waiting. She’s already coming out of the consultation room but stops when she sees me. That hateful smirk spreads across her face. She’s wearing biker shorts, net stockings, a leather jacket, and her hair is dyed a dark pink amidst the black.
“There’s got to be an explanation for this.” She taps her watch. “I waited almost two hours for a freaking consultation?”
“Your dresses are ready. There’s no need for a consultation. You can try them in the dressing room.”
She blinks, thrown off. “The dresses… are ready?”
“Yeah. I can’t stand looking at your face. Also, this will be the last time you can reach me as a stylist. I never want to work with you again. I’ve put you on our banned list. I’ve practically banned the surname Moretti from our Log.”
Flora busies herself with the garment bags. “We can have our valet put them in your car—”
“You think I’m stupid?” Jenna cuts her off. “You and Harvey back together?”
“I’ll give you guys a moment.” Flora quickly retreats.
“Be quick. What else do you want to say? We’re about to close.” I hap my fingers impatiently. I’m not in the mood to pretend Harvey and I are together, especially after how pissed I am today I don’t want to give that thought any space in my head.
“Jennifer!”
I whip around and Tinka is running toward me. She’s not alone too, Nate is right behind her.
“Tink-”
“Where the hell is your phone?” She grabs my shoulders.
“What? What’s going on with you guys!?”
“Harvey.” Tinka says his name like it explains everything. “What happened between you two earlier today?”
“You should ask him.” I cross my arms defensively.
“You don’t understand.” Nate murmurs, walking past me toward the reception TV. He grabs the remote and turns up the volume.
What comes on the screen is freaking scary…there’s fire burning mansion to crisp. Flames roar from every window with black smoke billowing in thick, choking columns that blot out the sky. The fire is so massive, so consuming, that it’s spread to the land off the mansion. I see fire trucks and police in riot gear…shoving back crowds, and in the background, I see males in handcuffs being loaded into cruisers.
Firefighting helicopters are dumping water that evaporates before it even reaches the worst of the blaze. The flames don’t care. They keep climbing…
As I stare at the screen and something clicks in my head.
This is the Reign’s home. Yes. I see the horse sculpture out front the one I noticed earlier. It’s the place where the nurse treated my knee earlier today.
Harvey didn’t leave!? Since Six hours ago!?
It drops in my chest like a stone, and I put my hand over my moth.

“That’s my dad’s house.” Jenna whispers, staring at the screen in horrified recognition. Her phone starts ringing aggressively, and she snatches it up.
Tinka pulls me aside. “What happened between you and Harvey
“He… we…” I stammer, realizing that whatever is happening is because I didn’t clear the air. I let him believe it because it hurt me that he believed it in the first place.
“He thinks me and Reign did something.”
Tinka stares at me in horror.
“He burnt a Don’s house to pieces.” Nate’s voice is low. “I had to call for backup to get him out of there, but he’d already set fire to the fucking house. And he’s still crashing out as we speak. He’s ordered gangsters around the city to take over the new building Reign just bought for the casino too. He’s gathering people to literally tear down every establishment of the Moretti family.”
“W-what?” My throat goes dry. Nate recounts everything, and I press my hands over my eyes, trying to clear the guilt crushing my chest. But there’s no time to even feel it as I look from the screen back to Nate’s exhausted face. He looks like he’s been through hell and back.
It affected Harvey that much?
I just wanted him to feel a fraction of what I felt when I found out about him and Jenna. I didn’t think burning the entire world down was part of his anger package. And I… would he even listen to me now? Does he hate me the most in all of this?
“W-where is he now?”
“He went up to stock up on his guns. I swear, if you don’t get to him in the next few minutes, he’s going to hit the streets and anything you could tell him to stop won’t matter. Elio’s been trying to talk to him, but he’s not hearing.”
“Reign?” I hear Jenna’s voice sharpen on the phone. She glares at me for a short moment before running out of the office.
I sprint to my office first, grabbing my phone to try calling Harvey before he does something worse. My hands shake. My chest hammers against my ribs. I feel myself starting to cry as I dial, but he doesn’t pick up. Again. Again. Nothing.
I get into the car with Nate and Tinka.
Twenty minutes later, we pull up to Harvey’s home and Elio is right at the door.
I stumble out, searching the old man’s face. Please don’t tell me Harvey has already left. Please don’t tell me he’s gone. I’ll regret this for the rest of my life if he gets himself in deeper trouble for something I could have so easily cleared up.
“Please tell me. Please tell me he…”
“He is upstairs. He went to wash off. Miss Jennifer, please be careful…”
