Chapter 81

Harvey Prescott.

“Right here.”

Dad’s personal assistant gestures for me to enter. I don’t remember the guy’s name, and I’m also not sure how long he’s been waiting out here. Before I even step into the sitting area. I hear Winny’s whining but the moment she sees me, she clamps

her mouth shut.

Dad is seated, and he lifts his eyes to me. Baxter is on the left side, being very quiet. Well, of course he would be, especially if Dad is thinking about adding him back to the accounts and housing him.

“Sorry for being late.”

“Two hours.” Dad notes flatly.

“My girlfriend was around.”

Baxter snaps his neck toward me in surprise when I say that. Yeah, surprise…. Jennifer and I are back together. And I’d rather be in bed with her than anywhere in this… well, whatever is about to happen.

Winny resumes her seat and crosses her legs.

“What’s going on in the casino world? Those fires I saw on the news…” Dad looks genuinely confused and worried.

It’s a brutal world.” I say cause from the way he’s asking questions. I don’t think he has any idea that I’m the one who started it. Hmm. Let’s keep it that way.

“And you have no idea what’s happening?” Winny’s tone is pointed at me. “I mean, you’re a gangster. Didn’t you hear about what’s happening?”

I know exactly what she’s doing. Calling me that in front of him like she needs to remind her husband of something he conveniently forgot. That I’m the bastard. The dangerous one. The one she rescued from the jungle where lions would’ve

caten me.

I don’t answer and her face goes red. She thought I’d be embarrassed in front of the old man, and I just proved her wrong. When will she learn that I’ll always embarrass her as long as we breathe the same air?

Tasked both of you to come here today because I’m about to make the most important decision of your lives.”

Baxter snaps straight like a trained dog but I stay relaxed because to me, the most important decision of my life was made yesterday and this morning. Jennifer. Being with her is literally the most important thing. No one has any idea how relieved I am to know she didn’t have anything to do with Reign.

“And what is that?” Baxter asks.

“It’s about the future of the Prescott Holdings.”

“What? But you’re not retired!” Baxter blurts out.

I shake my head at him. If only he would just chill and stop making it so obvious that he feels like he’s on a hot seat.

“Can you let me speak?”

“Sorry… Dad.”

Francis Prescott rises to his feet. That’s how I know this is going take time. I glance at my watch and bite back a sigh 1

have two adult sons, and therefore this is the time to talk about the fate of the company. As you both know, Prescott Holdings was started by my great-grandfather, and for all those years, he gave it to the most deserving son who proved

himself.

Baxter shoots me a sharp look. I can see he’s struggling to stay seated. I never thought old man Francis was anywhere near retirement, so this is actually coming as a surprise to me. For one I was the illegitimate son whose interest was more in the casino and never in the company. I guess I thought he would wait until Baxter was capable. The fact that he’s saying this now shows that he didn’t exempt me from that procedure or scrutiny

“Between the two of you. Harvey came into the family business ater, yet he’s done miraculous things that have raised our shares to heights unseen in thirty years. Baxter. He pauses. “You’ve been in the family longer. But you’ve been relaxed. Your last internship? You skipped meetings. Watched video games on the company computer-”

*Dad-*

“I sent you there to learn, Baxter. I gave you chances when you were sixteen, eighteen, twenty, twenty-four, twenty-five and more. You turned the office space into a golf course on many occasions. Used company funds for… miscellaneous things.”

“Francis, he…” Winny tries to interject.

He continues despite her interruption.

Im sure you took this your internship with complacency because your mom kept telling you that an illegitimate son will never be able to take over the company. She was wrong because larvey is my son and my blood and it’s my decision to make”

“The shareholders know Harvey Prescott is the business-minded one because he has earned the name. Though they know his dealings can be violent, they know he takes care of his enterprise. But what do they know about you, Baxter? They know of your Instagram lives and sports cars, and nothing of your own name…”

“Dad, give me a chance! I can still-”

“According to the rules of who takes over the company next, as stated in the Prescott Holdings Succession Act, Article 4, Section 2: In the event of multiple eligible heirs, the shareholders must convene and vote by majority to determine the successor. The shareholders have voted. Harvey takes over.”

I let my hand drop from my chin and stare at my father because he looks like he’s serious. Baxter rises to his feet, as well as Winny.

“However, there’s a clause my great-grandfather put in. Article 7 Section 1: ‘No successor may assume full leadership unless they are married. He cared about family. Wanted to make sure the Prescott legacy continues through generations. So for now, Harvey, you have the ball in your court but leadership only comes when you have a wife.”

“But Dad, I’m married….” Baxter says. “I mean, Nisha and I are still married. It started as an arrangement but it can become something-”

“Really? You’re starting to love her? Since I cut off your cards, my assistant told me not once did you two see each other. You think I’m stupid?”

“Dad-

“Harvey. Get married and I’ll formally step down. I’m tired of handling the company’s affairs myself. I want to take my time to tour the world and then meet grandkids.”

I let out a dry smirk. I’m not enthusiastic about his plan to make me his heir. I like the casino business. I don’t like to mix suits and skyscraper companies behind it. But the shareholders have spoken. King’s Casino was part of Prescott Holdings that Dad gave me to work on, so I can’t exactly cut myself away from it even if for all my life I have tried to let this family

cut me out.

“NOOOOOO!” Winny screams at Francis. I don’t think he has realized that she has been squeezing her fist the moment she

started talking. Apart from squeezing her fist, tears have been rushing from her eyes and her chest has been heaving all over the place in a complete mess. “No, no no…”

“Winny, it’s my company. Not your family’s Francis tells her.

“What does my son get then? What does Baxter walk away with while your bastard takes everything?”

That will be up to Harvey as the new CEO and Founder.” Dad gets up from the couch. I get up too. “And don’t even tell me no. Harvey. It’s not my decision. The shareholders that make up our company have decided.” He raises his hand to stop me from saying anything I would have wanted to say.

He stops for a moment before he’s about to walk away.

“You must seem to really like her… Jennifer?”

‘Yes.’ I answer.

Then marry her. She seems to be the only person that brings a smile out of you after your mother. That means something. I would like to have dinner with the both of you too.” He says and then walks away.

With him gone out of my sight, I’m left with Winny who is beginning to weep more, more aggressively. She storms away I’m already pulling back before I see her leaving. I walk out leaving Baxter behind but at this point, my phone is ringing as soon as I step out under the sun and it’s from a friend. The kind of friend that only calls you when you need to watch your back regarding something they heard.

Yeah

“You watching your back?

“What did you hear?”

“You touched the Moretti’s property. What do you think is gonna happen? Harvey, the Don is on you.”

I close my eyes in exhaustion. “Of course he is.”

but

“Harvey, you just threw a bomb at the city. You better be prepare. Word is he’s asking every clique on the side of town that knows him to fuck you up. You know there’s no clique in Manhattan that won’t do as he asks, right?”

“Got it.” I end the call and quickly put on another person on the ne. The detective I put on my mom to approach my mom. As soon as he picks, I tell him to stop. If there’s danger already around me, I don’t want to bring my mother into the scene so she would stay where she is.

Shit. Shit.

Jennifer. I have to make sure everyone around me is okay. And just as I’m thinking about her, her text lights up my phone.

“What do you think about a Soiree?” I read.
