Chapter 53 A Dinner Invitation With Hidden Motives
“Go on.” Stefan would like to know where his wife was going with this. However, Cynthia didn’t answer him. Instead, she took the phone and asked, “Hazel, tell me- are you asking Evan to come back for dinner because you want to get back together with him?”
“Of course. Evan is my husband!”
Hazel had lied and claimed she wanted to reconcile just to lure Evan over. She was absolutely determined to do everything in her power for Zeke’s sake.
“Good, that’s settled then.” Cynthia smiled. “I’ll take care of it. We’ll help you.”
Hazel lit up. “Thank you, Mom! I’ll head back now!”
After she hung up, Stefan frowned. “Why did you agree to that? Evan already cut ties with us. Doing this will just mess up his life.”
“Think about it. You’ve been trying to keep the whole ‘cutting ties’ thing under wraps, no?” Cynthia explained.” What’s easier to hide from the world than saying the two kids patched things up and got back together?
“And why did Evan and our daughter divorce in the first place? Because they didn’t spend enough time together. They drifted apart. I’m sure we can get all the misunderstandings cleared up if we get them to sit down and really talk. Besides, don’t you want Evan to come home?”
“I see your point.”
Cynthia wanted the two of them to talk things out while the one-month cooling-off period wasn’t over yet. At least that meant that there was still a chance for them to fix things.
“But…” Stefan still had doubts. The problem was that Evan had severed ties, and he had done it decisively. Also, it was unrealistic of them to expect their daughter to suddenly give up on Zeke. They wouldn’t exactly be in this mess if she were capable of letting him go.
“Let’s just try. I’ve already agreed to help her.” Cynthia meant well as she genuinely hoped the two would reconcile. Little would she know that Hazel only wanted Evan to continue donating blood.
Meanwhile, Evan had finished his day of training. When he saw Stefan’s incoming call, he didn’t think much of it and answered. “Hello, Mr. Solberg. What’s going on?”
It was as Stefan had said—even though he had cut ties, the old bond was still there. He would take calls from Stefan and Cynthia, but not from Hazel.
“Um… Evan… I-I was wondering…” Stefan stammered for a long time but couldn’t get the words out. In the end, he shoved the phone toward Cynthia. “You do it!”
“You’re completely hopeless.” Cynthia shot him a glare, took the phone, and said warmly, “Evan, have you had dinner? Why don’t you come over to our place to eat instead? I have something I want to talk to you about.”
It wasn’t entirely a lie. Yes, she wanted to get him to come over, but she did genuinely want to talk as well. Either way, she was careful not to mention Hazel.
“Mrs. Solberg, you can just tell me whatever it is over the phone. Don’t bother with dinner.” Evan declined politely.
“It has to do with Mr. Solomon…”

Evan turned grim upon hearing that, so he agreed after a brief silence.
“I’ll be waiting for you then!”
Sylvie came pattering over in her slippers the second Cynthia hung up. Her eyes locked onto Evan as she inquired, “Evan, who called?”
She didn’t breathe a word about blocking Hazel’s number on his phone, especially not the fact that she’d changed her contact name to “wife.”
“A relative of mine,” Evan said with a small smile, careful not to reveal Cynthia’s identity. “She invited me to her home for dinner.”
“What? What about me?” Sylvie frowned at once. “Are you really going to leave me alone here?”
