After all, Sylvie’s presence was clearly different from everyone else’s. She practically exuded an air of nobility with every movement she took. Still, the crowd immediately understood that she wasn’t the star of the night when she took a seat off to the side.

Caleb raised his voice. “Next, let us welcome Dr. Norwood with our warmest applause!”

Thunderous applause erupted as the lights dimmed.

There was no famous doctor named Norwood in Silverton’s medical circle. However, the powerful figures in attendance all shared the same thought, which was that anyone Caleb treated with such respect was definitely extraordinary.

“Dr. Norwood? A miracle doctor named Norwood?”

At the very back, the three heiresses all stiffened when they heard that name.

“Evan’s original last name was Norwood,” Roxanne whispered.

Anya waved her hand dismissively. “So what if his last name was Norwood? You’re being too sensitive, Roxanne. It’s probably just a coincidence.”

She meant that it didn’t matter that the miracle doctor who saved Gaius had the last name Norwood, as there was no proof that Caleb was referring to Evan. After all, there were many people with that last

name.

Roxanne parted her lips to say something, but eventually decided to keep mum.

Evan’s name had surfaced in her mind the second Caleb mentioned that the miracle doctor’s last name was Norwood. It had even stirred something faint in her chest.

Now, it was clear she’d been overthinking. She had spent three years with him, so she knew better than anyone that Evan didn’t know medicine at all.

A beam of light suddenly cut through the dim hall, shining straight at the entrance to the stage.

Everyone turned to look in unison, including Caleb. Evan was supposed to be standing there.

Sylvie’s beautiful eyes lit up as she clapped, anticipation flickering across her face. She wondered what kind of entrance Evan would make.

There was only one person who wasn’t looking forward to it-Artemisia. That was because she knew no one was going to appear, as she hadn’t picked him up. Judging from how things were shaping up, reality was not out to prove her wrong tonight.

One minute passed. Yet, the spot remained empty.

Two minutes passed. Not even a series of footsteps could be heard.

Three minutes. Nothing.

Everyone waited for five full minutes.

Caleb and Sylvie froze. Every guest in the hall was aghast. Where had the important guest gone?

There was still no sign of him when the lights came back on.

The room erupted in an uproar.

“Dr. Stone, what’s going on? Where is he? You said you’d sent someone to pick him up.”

Sylvie was the angriest one by far as she shot to her feet and demanded an answer from Caleb.

“M-My daughter… She…”

Caleb was nearly scared out of his wits. Even at his age, he had no idea how to salvage this situation now that he was stuck between a rock and a hard place.

He had sent Artemisia to pick Evan up, and she had shown up for the banquet. So, where was Evan?

Sylvie promptly made a call. Whatever she heard on the other end made her expression visibly darken.

By the end of it, her face was stone cold, her eyes glinting darkly.

“Dr. Stone, we will not attend any of your events from this day on. You are officially on the Stanton family’s blacklist.”

She tossed out those words coldly, grabbed her bag, and stormed out.

“Wait! Ms. Stanton, there must be a misunderstanding! Ms. Stanton, please wait! Ms. Stanton!”

Caleb felt the blood drain from his face.

He knew exactly what those words meant. Being blacklisted by the Stanton family was no different from being completely cut off from high society.

Alas, it was already too late to rectify this situation, as Sylvie had already stormed away in a flurry of

skirts.

Suddenly, another piercing ringtone could be heard. It’s usually melodic chiming sounded like a death knell as it rang beside Caleb’s ear.

His entire body stiffened. His body started trembling as he lowered his head to look at the screen. His mind went blank the second he laid his eyes on the caller ID, collapsing on the spot.
