Kai and Zoren chatted throughout the way back into the house, holding hands like best friends. The sight almost made me cry from joy. There was already a growing bond between them and this is just their first time hanging out. I can’t wait to see how closer they’ll become. Before we went right in, I noticed that they were some guards stationed around the corners of the building.

“Who are they?” Kai asked, pointing towards the ones who opened the door for us.

“They’re my guards. They keep us safe and make sure harm doesn’t come upon us.” Zoren responded and Kai nodded before asking again.

“Does this mean you’re someone important?” His head was tilted sideways. I let out a sigh, wishing Kai knew when to stop with his questions but he was a kid and kids loves to ask questions.

“Kai, don’t make your new friend uncomfortable with your questions.” I called out, but Zoren shook his head.

“Nah, it’s fine.” He said to me before facung Kai.

“I’m not sure I’m that important, but the position of my job makes me have a lot of enemies. They might try to harm me, that’s why I need those guards. Since you’re here now, my guards will protect you too.”

Kai pointed towards me. “And my mommy? They need to protect her too!”

Oh my god… my face was on fire when Zoren glanced at me with an amused expression on his face while nodding.

“Of course they will.”

“Scouts honor?” Kai asked and Zoren nodded

“Scouts honor,”

After that, we resumed walking. I could see a few maids eying us with curiosity as we walked, all bowing to Zoren in respect, and eying me in curiosity. I wonder what all of them were thinking right now.

Zoren stopped us at the entrance of the ivory room.

“I’ll be off now.” He said to Kai who pouted, clearly not wanting to be separated from him yet.

“Why aren’t you sleeping in there with us? It was your room before, right? The sheets smelled like you

yesterday.” Kai breathed out, his hold not loosening from Zoren’s hand and I choked on thin air, unable to meet Zoren’s eyes as he chuckled before crouching in front of Kai.

“It was my room before, but not anymore, because I want you two to be very comfortable.” He explained and Kai frowned.

“But the bed is very big.”

I sighed again, wishing I could disappear right now.

“Kai, we’ll see him again after you freshen up. Don’t keep your new friend waiting, he has a lot to do.” I breathed out, and Kai still wanted to object but he sighed and reluctantly let go of Zoren.

After Zoren got to his feet, I pointedly refused to meet his gaze, feeling weirdly flustered.

“Bye, Kai.” Zoren called out before leaving and I was left breathing hard for some ununkmown reasons.

Inside the room, Kai didn’t waste any time. He undressed and was in the shower in no time. After scrubbing all the dust from his body, I toweled him dry while he talked my ear off. As I moved around the room, that twig of tiredness filtered through my body again. With Zoren gone, the pain in my chest has returned and now, it felt like it was pulling hard on my entire insides to the point that it was almost hard to breath. The bite on my neck was hurting and throbbing. My head was spinning every now and then. It felt like my eyes were dimming around the edge whenever I stayed long without breathing. And lastly, I was spacing out so much.

And I didn’t understand why I was feeling this way. I was perfectly fine until halfway into Kai’s game that I

weirdly began to feel drained and tired as hell. Now It looked like something had sucked all the energy from my soul, leaving me empty and hollow.

“Mommy, are you okay?” Kai’s voice pulled me out of my thoughts and as I blinked down at him, I realized that I’ve been spaced out again.

“I’m okay, baby.” I breathed out, exhaling hard.

“Are you sure? You haven’t been answering me for a while.” He pointed out and i apologized at once.

“I just have a lot on my mind.” I sighed out, pushing my hair out of my face, then I helped him slip into his shirt, ignoring his protests that he could do it himself.

After that, Kai urged me to freshen up as well, eager for us to get to the dining room so he could be around Zoren again. As I looked through my clothes, a wave of dizziness gripped me which I pushed away fast, then I blinked in confusion, wondering what the hell was happening. That bite on my neck was still hurting and I scrunched my nose, wondering if that was why I was feeling this way. Zoren had said the doctor will prepare something to cure this chest pain before the end of today and I hoped that will also work for this throbbing bite mark.

“Mommy?” Kai called out and I turned around to face him.

“Yes, love?”

He had a frown on his face, seated in the bed as he spoke. “You smell weird, mom. Are you sure you’re okay?” He asked and my eyes widened.

“Weird?” I echoed and he nodded.

“I’m just tired, that’s all I feel right now.”

He bit on his lips then nodded, then I hurriedly dressed up, putting a cherry smile on as I announced it was time for us to leave. I had to force the smile on because I didn’t want him to grow worried about me, especially now that it seems he was suspecting something was wrong. But nothing was wrong, I just feel tired. I wasn’t feeling up to the dinner tonight, but I won’t let him go without me, not with that vile Erica still present in this house.

Jet was already waiting to lead us to where the dining room was at, and as we walked, to distract myself from the tiredness in my veins and the pain in my chest, I made light conversation with Jet.

“Have you always worked for zoren?”

He shook his head. “I was on the street, homeless and starving when he saw me one day. He took me in and gave me a home ever since. I’m forever grateful to him for that.” As he spoke, my eyes widened in surprise. I never knew Zoren could be that compassionate.

There’s truly a lot I don’t know about zoren.

“That’s so cool,” I tell him, meaning it and he smiled at me.

“You becoming our Luna while Kai, our little prince, will sit alongside you on the throne.” He breathed out and my eyes widened as shock rocked through me as my eyes quickly darted towards Kai who was already speaking.

“Luna? What does that mean? And did you just call me a prince, jet?”

I swore underneath my breath. That was such a slip up. Jet stood stiffly for seconds before making up something else to distract Kai and it thankfully walked. I heaved in relief as we resumed walking towards the dining room.

When the large doors got thrown open to reveal a large grand room with a long table and so many chairs around it, Kai gasped in awe as he looked around, but my eyes went to the person who was standing at the far end of the room, beside the chair at the head of the table. She offered me a broad grin while flipping her hair.

Erica.

Of course she was here.

When Kai noticed her, he visibly deflated. “Mommy, why is she here?” He asked bluntly and Erica scoffed.

“Look at that little thing, as lousy as his mother.” She bit out icily as she leisurely rounded the table, approaching us. Beside me, Jet stiffened. He didn’t seem shocked, and it was clear he’s witnessed scenarios like this a lot.

“Don’t speak to my son that way.” I hurled back at her just as icily. I don’t care if she was way stronger than I am, I’ll always protect my son from her. As she got even closer, Kai pressed closer to me, and he awkwardly cleared his throat.

“Why don’t we-”

Erica hissed at him, instantly cutting him off. “Shut it, you charity case. Now, scram.”

Jet stiffened, his face falling before he turned and left.

“Why did you speak to him that way? That’s low.” I tell her but she rolled her eyes, laughing like I said something amusing.

“What’s amusing is you assuming you can tell me what to do.” She breathed out as she finally came to stand in front of me.

My eyes briefly darted around and I noted that we’re alone right now. There’s also cutlery on the table, she could hurt me or my son if I make her angry, and at the end, Zoren believes her over me because he believes she couldn’t hurt a fly.

That made me take in a deep breath and pulled all my anger under control, then I spoke in a calm, steady voice. “We just want to have dinner and retire back to our room, that’s all,”

She slowly grinned as she looked me up and down, clearly feeling victorious that I backed down first. But I have to be smart cause I have someone I’m protecting, my son.

“That’s cool, however since I head you’re all about to have dinner together like a happy family, I’ve decided to invite myself, cause will the family dinner be complete without the woman of the house present?”
