Zoe knew Ivy's personality. If something hadn't seriously provoked her, she would never have lost her composure like that.

"What happened in there? Do you actually know one of those men?"

"He's my boyfriend. We've been together for three years..." Ivy's voice trembled violently as a sob choked her throat.

Zoe's jaw dropped. "Wait, you mean the guy they called Young Mr. Donovan?"

"Yes."

Zoe knew Ivy had a boyfriend she was deeply in love with.

She had always known that.

But Ivy had always described him as a regular corporate employee.

He was always supposedly swamped with work, which was why he had never met any of her friends.

"Are you absolutely sure?"

Zoe had worked part-time at The Jade Pavilion several times and had seen this Young Mr. Donovan twice.

Every single time, the manager had aggressively warned the staff not to offend him, and certainly not to harbor any delusional fantasies about him.

How on earth could he be Ivy's boyfriend?

"We've lived together for three years. I think I can recognize my own boyfriend..."

Zoe looked completely astounded. "So he purposefully hid his identity from you? Ivy, last year at our university's anniversary gala, the woman who made that massive ten-million-dollar endowment to the school was Mrs. Donovan. That Young Mr. Donovan's mother!"

Ivy's hands shook uncontrollably. She couldn't form a single word.

No wonder the breakup had been so clinically efficient.

From the very beginning, he was just playing a game with her.

Why else would he refuse to even tell her his real name?

Seeing the blood completely drain from Ivy's face, Zoe asked gently, "Are you okay?"

Ivy fought back her tears. "I'm so sorry I got you screamed at tonight. I think... I just need to go home."

"Let me walk you," Zoe offered.

"No, it's fine. It's a long commute back to campus for you anyway."

Zoe didn't push it. When it came to heartbreak, especially the kind where someone completely shatters your trust and uses you, there was nothing anyone else could say to fix it.

She had no choice but to head back alone.

Honestly, anyone in this situation could only curse their terrible luck.

Ivy was gorgeous. When a billionaire heir went after a college girl like her, it was almost always just because he wanted to get in her pants and play house for a while.

Once he got bored, he tossed her aside. He was certainly never going to marry her.

Zoe's heart broke for her friend.
