Now, the man didn't even bother answering whether he had grown bored.
He merely said—
"An amicable split is the best outcome for both of us."
Ivy lowered her gaze, unable to look him in the eye.
His eyes were always so calm. When things were good, it felt like mature stability; when things were bad, it was just pure, callous indifference.
She had craved his stability, which meant she inevitably had to endure the coldness that came with it.
Ivy had always understood this trade-off.
And she had been willing to accept it.
But she never expected this.
That the next time she faced his coldness, it would be him demanding an amicable split.
A lump formed in Ivy's throat as silent tears rolled down her cheeks.
She had never been in a serious relationship before. She had never imagined being dumped, and her mind went totally blank on how to beg him to stay...
So, only a heavy silence remained.
A flicker of pity seemed to cross his face. He walked over to her, crouched down, and gently wiped a tear from the corner of her eye.
"Keep the bank card safe. The PIN is your phone passcode."
"I'm leaving the country in about a week. If you need anything in the short term, you can still reach out to me."
"Being with you was a joy, and a privilege."
"Take good care of yourself from now on."
Just as he finished speaking, his phone rang. He held it to his ear, murmuring several brisk agreements.
"Something's come up. Take some time to process this, and we'll talk later."
It seemed that to him, handling a relationship was exactly like handling a corporate merger.
State the terms, make it clear, provide the severance package.
And the contract is terminated.
Ivy's mind was a complete blank. By the time she snapped out of her daze, he was already gone, leaving her entirely alone in the apartment.
The suffocating silence made her head spin.
"Shouldn't you go check on her? Even if you're set on breaking up, devastating the poor girl like that isn't exactly fair. Based on the look on her face, she completely misunderstood what she just saw."
The woman speaking was Diana Marsh. She was five years older than Eliam Donovan, a former student sponsored by his mother, and an absolute financial prodigy. After returning from studying abroad, she had been fast-tracked into The Donovan Group.
Now that Eliam was rotating through the regional branch to gain executive experience, Mrs. Donovan had assigned Diana to his side as his most trusted associate.
Eliam kept his gaze fixed on the distance. "It's fine. A misunderstanding works in my favor."
He was notoriously results-oriented.
Since the only acceptable outcome was a breakup.
It didn't matter how gently he executed it; the pain was inevitable.
So chasing after her was pointless. Besides, he had a crucial business dinner tonight.
"But..." Diana tried to protest.
Eliam shot her a look so chilling it froze the words in her throat.
She wisely snapped her mouth shut.
Having worked with Eliam for two years, she knew exactly who he was. When they first met, his impeccable manners and effortless grace made him seem like a perfectly approachable gentleman. The reality was a terrifying contrast.
