Substitute Wife, Genius CEO novel Chapter 223

He paused before adding, "Or you can get out of the car right now and wait for an ambulance."

Either of those choices was a death sentence for her.

Xavier was clearly blowing her off. He didn't believe her at all. Did she really think he would take her to the hospital after picking up Lily?

But if she got out of the car now, there wasn't even a place to take shelter from the storm. In the freezing, gale-force winds of a winter downpour, she would turn into a block of ice in minutes.

"Have you decided, Summer? Are you going to keep acting? If not, sit there quietly."

*Click!* Summer unbuckled her seatbelt.

Xavier's brow darkened. "Is this really necessary, Summer? We're about to get a divorce anyway, so what is the point of throwing this tantrum? Lily suffered from depression when she was abroad. I need to get to her immediately."

Summer was in too much agony to even form a complete sentence.

If Xavier had just taken one proper look at her, he would have noticed her ashen complexion and purplish lips. It wasn't normal pain; it looked exactly like poisoning.

Gritting her teeth, Summer managed to say, "Pull over."

"Summer!" Xavier frowned heavily. "Why are you being so stubborn?! There's a torrential storm outside, and we're in the middle of nowhere. What exactly are you trying to accomplish by getting out here? Are you threatening me, or just trying to make me feel guilty?"

Summoning every ounce of her remaining strength, Summer roared, "Stop the car! I told you to pull the hell over!"

A screech of tires echoed as the car slammed to a halt by the curb.

Xavier was so enraged his jaw was locked tight. The veins on the backs of his hands bulged against the steering wheel, and a suffocating, oppressive aura radiated from him.

"Get the hell out—"

Clutching her purse, Summer forced the door open. She practically tumbled out of the vehicle, collapsing onto the wet pavement.

Before she could even crawl away, the car shot forward like an arrow released from a bow, mercilessly speeding off.

The massive spray of water kicked up by the tires completely drenched her, soaking her clothes to the bone.

Sitting on the side of the road, Summer dialed 911.

Forget it. Summer wasn't worth his concern.

She had purposely put on an act to target Lily and stop him from saving her. She brought this upon herself. Getting drenched was her own karma!

Xavier redialed Lily's number. It went through, but again, no one answered.

His entire heart refocused entirely on Lily. Summer was instantly banished to the farthest corners of his mind.

The next morning, at the hospital.

When Summer woke up, the first person she saw was Yates Hawthorne.

Yates was speaking with the doctor about her condition. Seeing her open her eyes, he walked over and asked, "Feeling any better?"

The agonizing cramps were gone. Summer gave a slight nod. She wanted to ask what had happened, but when she opened her mouth, no sound came out.

Yates glanced at the caregiver, who immediately poured Summer a glass of warm water with a straw. Summer took a few small sips.
