Substitute Wife, Genius CEO novel Chapter 258

Ten minutes later.

Xavier sat expressionless at the head of the table, lightly tapping his fingers against the surface. "Give it to me straight. Can this go live tomorrow or not?"

The so-called elite core of the R&D department sat in the conference room, heads bowed, not daring to breathe too loudly.

No one dared to speak.

Xavier let out a soft scoff, his gaze sweeping lightly over everyone present. Yet to them, his look was as sharp as a blade, bearing down on them until they buried their heads even lower.

"I'm sorry, Mr. Sterling. I'm the head of the R&D department. The blame is mine," Lily finally spoke up.

Xavier patted Lily's hand consolingly. "It's not your fault. No matter how brilliant the general is, if they're dragged down by a bunch of idiots, they still can't win the battle."

The crowd silently accepted their label as idiots, not daring to argue.

Lily had been burning the midnight oil at the company for days and looked haggard. Xavier's heart ached for her, and he asked Paige to escort her home.

Lily vehemently refused, declaring she would stay by everyone's side.

Ultimately, Xavier scooped her up into his arms in front of everyone and carried her into his private lounge. It wasn't until he had coaxed Lily to sleep that he emerged again.

Paige asked quietly, "Mr. Sterling, there's only one day left. Once Pax's license expires, we can't use it anymore. Should we push the launch first and fix the bugs later?"

Xavier rejected the idea without a second thought. "No."

Just then, Xavier's phone buzzed. It was a message from Summer.

Xavier initially didn't want to bother with it, but upon reading the contents, he paused.

Xavier grabbed his phone and called Summer back. "Summer, I can't make it to the registry tomorrow."

The one-month cooling-off period was over, and they could finally get their divorce finalized tomorrow.

Afraid that Xavier had forgotten, Summer had sent that text as a reminder, scheduling to meet him at the registry at 9 a.m. sharp.

Summer set down the folder containing her divorce documents, her eyes flashing with anger. "Xavier, what do you mean? Are you backing out?"

"Pax is no longer licensing the patent. The company is going to be incredibly busy. I can't get away."

Summer fell silent. Xavier had called her specifically, specifically mentioned Pax, and specifically mentioned being busy.

He was trying to say that because of Pax, he wouldn't have time to go to the registry with her anytime soon.

Not just tomorrow, but for the foreseeable future.
