At 3 AM, the doorbell to Lily's mansion rang frantically.
National Security agents held up their badges and a warrant. "Ms. Sutton, please come with us. We need you for further questioning."
Being ripped from her sleep put Lily in a foul mood, and her face visibly darkened. "I thought I was already cleared of suspicion?"
The agent replied firmly, "We've uncovered new evidence and require you to come back and cooperate with the investigation."
Summer happened to be walking out of the interrogation center just as Lily was being brought in.
Lily stopped in her tracks, a flash of disbelief in her eyes. "Pax, how did you get out?"
Summer smiled at her. "Lily, instead of worrying about me, you should really be worrying about yourself. This is a state-level project. Selling the core code is tantamount to selling national secrets—espionage. That's a firing squad offense. Not even Xavier Sterling can save you now. You're done, Lily."
A deep sense of dread washed over Lily, but she had always been good at keeping her composure. "Pax, you can think whatever you want, but you shouldn't spew nonsense. I told them it wasn't me, and until this investigation is officially closed, no one is innocent. Including you."
Summer scoffed and walked right past her. "Keep acting tough. Let's see you try to talk your way out of it when the evidence is slapped right across your face."
Summer reached the main entrance. Gavin Loomis, who was supposed to pick her up, hadn't arrived yet. Instead, she spotted Xavier, who had just dropped Lily off.
Xavier looked like he had no intention of leaving, casually leaning against his car door while smoking a cigarette.
How deeply devoted.
Summer took one look and looked away, standing a good distance from him without saying a word.
She pulled her jacket tighter around herself. Winters in the north were brutal, and at three in the morning, the temperature was easily below freezing.
Xavier crushed his cigarette out, opened his car door, and pulled out an expensive coat. He offered it to her like a gentleman. "Ms. Pax. It's clean."
"No thanks." Summer didn't even glance at the jacket, stepping further away from him.
Seeing that Pax didn't appreciate the gesture, Xavier didn't push it. But in the freezing air, he caught a faint whiff of an agarwood scent—a scent remarkably similar to Summer's.
