Substitute Wife, Genius CEO novel Chapter 294

She looked incredibly fragile, a sight that naturally shattered the hearts of those who loved her.

Lydia spoke in a hushed tone. “The doctor said the shock was too severe. If she had arrived even a minute later, she would have lost the baby.”

By the end of her sentence, Lydia's voice choked up. “Xavier, Summer is too vicious. She's trying to drive Lily to her grave. She knows exactly how important a girl's reputation is, and she made sure this blew up publicly at your own wedding reception.”

“How is my poor Lily supposed to live her life now?” Unable to hold back her grief, Lydia began to sob softly.

Bennett wrapped an arm around her shoulder and patted her comfortingly.

He then looked at Xavier. “Xavier, please don't mind her. She's just heartbroken for her daughter.”

“I understand,” Xavier replied heavily.

Lydia wiped her tears. “Today was supposed to be the most important day of Lily's life. She should have been a queen, but now it's all turned into this.”

“Sigh,” Bennett let out a heavy breath.

Lydia continued, “We're so terrified Lily won't be able to handle this. She might do something drastic. She already has a history of depression. What are we going to do now? *Sob...*”

Bennett chimed in, “Xavier, please be patient and take good care of our Lily from now on.”

Xavier tucked the blanket securely around Lily, leaned down, and gently kissed her forehead. Then, he turned to face Bennett and Lydia.

“Bennett, Lydia, don't worry. Lily is my wife, and I will take good care of her.”

“As for the person who hurt her,” a flash of ruthless malice crossed Xavier's eyes, “I won't let her get away with it.”

With Xavier's solemn promise, Bennett and Lydia exchanged a relieved glance.

Xavier had visited Lily's room first, but he still needed to see Carlson, so he couldn't stay long.

Bennett and Lydia magnanimously urged him to go check on his grandfather, assuring him they would watch over Lily and that he shouldn't worry.

The second Xavier walked out the door, the supposedly fast-asleep Lily opened her eyes. There wasn't a trace of sleep in them.

Lydia grabbed Lily's hand and patted it reassuringly. “Don't worry. From now on, just let your depression flare up. The sicker you get, the more Xavier will pity you, and the more he'll want that bitch Summer dead.”

Lily nodded. “I know, Mom.”

Faking a depressive episode meant she wouldn't have to face the fallout, and it would only amplify Xavier's guilt and heartache.

That was the only way to ensure Summer suffered an even worse fate.

Meanwhile, in Carlson's VIP suite.

*Smack!*

The moment Xavier stepped out of his grandfather's room, Arthur slapped him hard across the face.

“I'm sorry, Dad.”

Xavier had been so arrogantly confident that everything was under his control.

Even when he saw Summer at the venue, he hadn't worried for a second.

He was absolutely certain she wouldn't dare cause a scene.
