Substitute Wife, Genius CEO novel Chapter 301

Miles paced the sterile floor of the laboratory, refusing to leave the doctor's side as the DNA analysis was processed. He hadn't even stepped out to use the restroom.

He was anxious, terrified, and utterly overwhelmed.

Up until today, he had firmly believed Lily was his true sister. From the moment she was brought home, he had given her his unconditional love, spoiling and protecting her at every turn.

But now, reality was threatening to prove that he had cherished the wrong person.

Worse still, there was a very real possibility that he had destroyed his actual flesh and blood for the sake of an imposter.

The real sister he had sworn to protect had nearly died by his own hands.

He had to admit, when Leila had broken down at the restaurant, his actions had been entirely selfish.

Since Leila had a documented psychiatric history, he had assumed she wouldn't face legal consequences for her erratic behavior. At the time, he felt no guilt, believing everything he did was for Lily's benefit.

The memory made his temples throb, a splitting headache crashing over him.

If Summer was truly his sister, how could he ever look her in the eye again?

How could he possibly make amends and beg for her forgiveness?

The three-hour wait felt like a medieval torture session, the suffocating wave of despair practically tearing him apart from the inside.

The results were finally ready.

The printer hummed as it spat out the decisive documents.

The invisible blade hanging over his neck was about to drop.

Miles felt no sense of relief. Instead, his mouth went completely dry, his fingers turning ice-cold and trembling uncontrollably.

Shaking, he unscrewed a bottle of water and took a massive gulp before forcing the word out, his voice hoarse. "The results."

"The results confirm that Ms. Vance and Lily Sutton are half-sisters, sharing the same father."

All the color drained from Miles's face, while Summer remained entirely unfazed—she had known this all along.

The doctor cast a worried glance at him. "Mr. Sutton, are you alright?"

Miles took a ragged breath and squeezed his eyes shut. "Keep going," he rasped.

The doctor continued, "Lily Sutton and Bennett Sutton are a biological match for father and daughter. Summer Vance and Bennett Sutton are also a biological match."

This meant one of them was undoubtedly an illegitimate child.

Who was his real sister?

Deep down, he already knew the answer.

Summer knew entirely too much about his private life, and her unwavering composure in this room made the truth glaringly obvious.

Miles's expression visibly crumbled into absolute devastation. He looked at Summer with agonizing helplessness, looking as though he might shatter into a million pieces.

Summer acted as if she didn't notice his breakdown, offering no sympathy. "And the rest of the results?"
