"Why the hell did you bring that embarrassment to the award ceremony?! Hasn't the Sterling family lost enough face already? Do you get off on publicly humiliating us?"
Xavier deflected the outburst smoothly. "Grandpa, you're getting up there in age. Don't let your temper flare over every little thing. I'll handle the online situation."
"Bring that embarrassment back right now!"
Xavier replied coldly, "Tomorrow. It's too late tonight, and a pregnant woman needs her rest."
Since Lilith was currently pregnant with the Sterling twins, the old man had no choice but to swallow his rage. He slammed the phone down in a fury.
Xavier shoved his phone back into his pocket and took a long drag of his cigarette. The irritation and gloom settling over his features only deepened.
It felt as if the moment Lilith returned to the country, everything in his life—both personal and professional—had begun to unravel.
If Xavier weren't such a pragmatist, he would have genuinely believed Lilith was cursed and fundamentally incompatible with the Sterling family.
He let out a self-deprecating chuckle as he caught Summer's reflection in the glass pane before him.
She was walking his way, her eyes focused on her phone.
Seeing her, a strange ripple of emotion washed over him.
He couldn't shake the feeling that Summer's personality felt eerily similar to the young girl from his past. He had previously assumed her face was the result of cosmetic surgery, which was why he never doubted Lilith.
But at the family recognition banquet, Miles Sutton had explicitly stated that Summer had never undergone elective plastic surgery; she only had reconstructive procedures due to facial trauma.
Summer was also an orphan who had been adopted.
These aligning facts made Xavier wonder if he had recognized the wrong person all those years ago.
As Summer's silhouette drew closer, Xavier crushed his cigarette and stepped directly into her path.
"Summer, is there a misunderstanding between you and Julian? Why would he kidnap you? Besides, you look perfectly fine." As he spoke, his gaze swept over her assessingly.
Summer looked up, her brow furrowing when she realized it was him. "Whether it's a misunderstanding or not, go tell the cops."
She had absolutely nothing to say to him. Pivoting on her heel, she tried to step around him toward the restroom.
Seeing her walk away, Xavier reached out and grabbed her arm. "Summer, why didn't you ever tell me you were Pax?"
