"Was the surgery successful?"
The surgery was a success, but it couldn't change the fact that Lydia Sutton had suffered extensive facial burns and Bennett Sutton was permanently paralyzed from the waist down.
Lilith Sutton had just given birth, and Xavier Sterling, worried that stress would hinder her physical recovery, quickly reassured her, "Don't worry, I'll find them the absolute best doctors."
**
While Bennett and Lydia recovered in the hospital, the upper management of the Sutton Group filed in one by one to pay their respects.
Their visits were purely superficial. Their main goal was to assess the severity of Bennett's injuries and determine if he could still run the company.
Bennett's condition couldn't be hidden for long. Paralyzed from the waist down with a severe head injury, he wouldn't be returning to the office anytime soon.
He couldn't handle the corporate affairs, yet the company couldn't be left without a leader.
Because of this, the board of directors planned to appoint someone to act as interim CEO.
Even though Bennett was bedridden, his eyes and ears were still scattered throughout the company. He soon learned that the board had approached Summer Vance multiple times.
Summer had even grabbed dinner with them.
Assuming the board wanted Summer to step in as the acting CEO, Bennett lost his temper the moment she walked into his hospital room.
He completely snapped, screaming at her to get the hell out.
Summer stood there looking entirely bewildered, taking a long moment to process his outburst. "Dad, what did you just say?"
"Get out!"
Ever since Bennett learned he was paralyzed, his temper had grown volatile and explosive. He acted like an absolute lunatic.
Shedding his facade of a loving father, he glared at her fiercely. "If you think you can replace me, Summer, keep dreaming!"
Summer shook her head in heartbreak. "I don't."
"You don't?" Bennett's eyes were bloodshot. "You didn't just have dinner with the board members?"
"You don't believe me?" Summer looked deeply wounded, tears welling in her eyes. "Dad."
The way she said 'Dad' was laced with so much raw emotion that anyone listening would have felt a suffocating wave of despair.
"I'm your biological daughter too. How am I any less than Lilith?"
"I've worked so hard just so you would see me, accept me, acknowledge me, and love me. What exactly did I do wrong?"
"When you got hurt, I stood outside that operating room all night! I didn't sleep a wink!"
Bennett remained completely unmoved, letting out a cold scoff. "You were just terrified I'd die before you got your hands on my money. Stop playing the devoted daughter."
Summer's face fell into a mask of total disappointment. "Dad, that dinner with the board was organized by Dexter Whitmore. I had no idea why he even invited me."
"I came here today specifically to warn you. Dexter is positioning himself to become the acting CEO. Of course, believe what you want. Just take care of your health. I'll come visit you another time."
With that, Summer turned on her heel and walked out.
Half-believing her, Bennett ordered his assistant to look into it. The investigation proved Summer's words to be entirely accurate.
