The crash site was closest to Empire City General Hospital, which was why the ambulances had rushed them straight there.
Miles's assistant and bodyguard had also been severely injured. All three were currently in the operating room fighting for their lives.
Fortunately, the surgeries were a success. Because the bodyguard had shielded him during the impact, Miles suffered the lightest injuries, coming out with just fractures. However, the assistant and bodyguard who were in the front seats had sustained critical trauma.
Miles was wheeled into a private recovery suite, while the other two were immediately transferred to the ICU.
Eventually, Xander and Leo arrived at the floor.
"Mom, have you eaten?" Leo asked softly.
If Leo hadn't mentioned it, Summer wouldn't have even noticed her hunger. The moment the words left his mouth, her stomach growled audibly in response.
Leo smiled brightly. "It's a good thing Xander guessed you wouldn't have time for lunch and brought you something."
Summer turned to Xander. His assistant was carrying an elegant takeout bag from a five-star hotel restaurant.
Still balancing a fresh bouquet of flowers on his lap, Xander offered a gentle smile. "It was no trouble at all. I figured you'd be overwhelmed and forget to eat."
Summer was really starting to believe what Miles had said—Xander truly was a decent man.
She nodded graciously. "Thank you."
Xander handed the flowers to his assistant, instructing him to arrange them nicely by the bedside.
Taking a moment to eat, Summer paused and asked, "Did you buy these from the old lady outside too?"
Xander nodded. "Since I'm visiting a patient, I couldn't come empty-handed." He figured he might as well support the old woman's business while he was at it.
He shifted his gaze to the unconscious man in the bed. "How is he?"
Putting down her fork and wiping her mouth, Summer replied, "Thanks to his bodyguard shielding him, he took the least damage. Just some fractures. Looks like he'll be joining your wheelchair squad for a while."
Leo chimed in with a joke, "A warm welcome to Miles for joining our wheelchair squad! We just gained a new star player. I can even teach him my pro wheelchair drifting tricks. I guarantee he'll be rolling around flawlessly in no time."
Xander chuckled softly. "In that case, I should probably gift him a custom-built wheelchair."
Xander didn't linger too long. Lately, aside from his grueling physical therapy, he was relentlessly studying to catch up on everything he missed. Having slept through eight years of technological and corporate evolution, his workload was staggering.
As he prepared to leave, Summer expressed her gratitude once more, promising to treat him to dinner as a proper thank you.
Speaking of dinner, Summer suddenly remembered she still owed Silas Sinclair a meal. Unfortunately, Silas was currently away on an international business trip.
She would have to schedule it once he returned.
Xander pulled out his brand-new smartphone. "Since you're treating me to dinner, we should exchange contacts so we can coordinate."
After successfully adding each other's numbers, Summer walked Xander to the elevators before heading back to the hospital room.
"Mom, while we were chatting earlier, Xander asked when my birthday was, so I told him."
Leo's birthday was fast approaching. It was exactly next Wednesday.
"When he found out, he said he wanted to attend the party. I told him yes. Sorry, Mom, I didn't check with you first," Leo admitted, his face full of apology.
