Zelda was completely unhinged, raining slap after slap down on Lilith’s face.
Lilith shrieked like a dying animal, flailing wildly as she tried to fight back, pulling and tearing at Zelda in a chaotic brawl.
"You cheating tramp, you dare fight back?!" Zelda screamed. "Guards, hold her down!"
The bodyguards immediately moved in, forcing Lilith to her knees on the hard floor.
"Let me go!" Lilith cried out, lifting her swollen, red face. "Xavier! Help me!"
"You filthy whore, how dare you say my son's name!" Zelda roared.
*Smack!*
Another brutal slap landed.
Lilith let out a bloodcurdling scream as a bloody tooth flew from her mouth.
Zelda raised her hand to strike again, but Xavier grabbed her wrist. "Mom, stop."
Zelda stared at Xavier in absolute disbelief, looking at him as if he had lost his mind.
Her hand trembling, she pointed at the pathetic, bloody mess kneeling on the floor.
"She is a cheating, honorless tramp, and you’re still defending her?! Are you completely insane?!"
A flash of agonizing pain tore through Xavier’s eyes.
He wasn't insane. He simply couldn't accept that this was reality.
How could it be real?
He had known Lilith since they were children. They had loved each other for so many years.
How could she possibly betray him and sleep with another man?
How could she?
Xavier’s heart was bleeding, torn to absolute shreds.
He refused to believe it!
This couldn't be true!
There had to be a mistake!
His voice laced with desperate panic, Xavier argued, "Mom, the test results could be wrong. It’s a mistake."
"I think your brain is what’s broken!" Zelda screamed. "Your grandfather brought in the best medical team in the country! They don't make mistakes!"
"They did! The results are wrong!" Xavier insisted, his tone suddenly resolute, his eyes burning with frantic denial. "They have to be wrong! I know it!"
Lilith would never betray him.
She couldn't!
Zelda opened her mouth to argue, but Xander pulled her back, shaking his head silently.
Arthur also placed a hand on Zelda’s shoulder, signaling her to stop.
They all knew how deeply Xavier loved Lilith. He would gladly die for her.
Being betrayed by the person he loved most was a fatal blow to his sanity.
When pushed to the brink of extreme psychological trauma, the mind triggers a defense mechanism.
It subconsciously distorts, downplays, or completely erases the source of the agony to survive the reality of it.
Xavier pulled Lilith up from the floor. "Are you alright?"
He was asking if she was okay, but the look in his eyes wasn't his usual deep, warm affection.
