In the past, she only had to cough once, and Xavier would be frantic with worry.
If she shed a single tear, Xavier would look as though his heart were breaking.
Whatever she liked, even if she just cast a second glance at it, Xavier would immediately place it in her hands.
She simply could not accept this drastic fall from grace.
It was like feasting on delicacies every day and suddenly being forced to eat scraps; the psychological imbalance was unbearable.
Lilith wept in sorrow. "Xavier, how could you say that to me? I just love you too much! I want to know how you are all the time. What's wrong with that? Tell me, what did I do wrong?"
"What did you do wrong?" Xavier scoffed coldly as he took a sip of his drink. "Lilith, the doctor in the US who wrote your depression diagnosis was arrested for forging medical documents. Did you know that?"
"All that depression, that paranoia—it was all a complete lie to deceive me. Watching me run around like an idiot, panicking, fighting against my own family for you... you must have felt pretty proud of yourself, didn't you? What an accomplishment."
"You love me? Do you really? If you truly loved me, could you bear to lie to me?"
"Xavier, listen to—"
"Beep, beep, beep—" The icy dial tone echoed in her ear. He had hung up.
"Smash!" In a fit of rage, Lilith hurled her phone against the wall.
Shards of shattered glass rebounded, landing on the cheek of one of her sleeping infants.
"Waaah—"
The baby burst into tears, instantly waking the other, who also started wailing.
Lilith was already a tangled mess of anxiety. Hearing the babies cry only fueled her explosive temper.
"Mrs. Gable! Nanny! Where the hell did you die off to? Can't you hear the babies crying?"
At Lilith's furious bellow, the nannies rushed in and frantically tried to soothe the infants.
"Take them outside! They're so annoying!"
The nannies exchanged speechless glances. They were the ones who had been caring for the twins since birth.
Just a few months ago, Lilith had treated these babies like precious treasures, terrified of dropping them, treating them with infinite care.
Every day, it was "my darling" this and "my sweet baby" that. She acted as if they were her entire world.
They thought she actually loved them, but this was all it amounted to.
Now, she couldn't even be bothered to look at them.
Her true nature was completely exposed.
**
Lilith knocked on Bennett Sutton’s bedroom door.
Scarlett Pierce was giving Bennett a massage. Lilith shot her a look, completely ignoring her presence, and said, "Dad, I know you have your own companies under your name. I want to go to work."
Given Lilith’s current reputation, no other company would dare hire her.
If she wanted to build a successful career, her only option was working at one of Bennett's private enterprises.
Bennett did own several companies, but thinking about Lilith's notorious public image, he was terrified she would drag his businesses down with her.
