After the industry summit concluded, the organizers hosted a formal business banquet.
Silas was introducing Summer to several industry heavyweights when Xavier and Xander coincidentally walked over.
At high-profile events like this, everyone was a polished professional. No matter how deep their personal grudges ran, they maintained an immaculate facade of polite cordiality.
Furthermore, the higher one climbed, the broader their perspective became. Their minds opened up, and they stopped obsessing over petty grievances of the past.
A scumbag like Xavier was nothing more than a tiny bump on the long road of life.
He wasn't worth Summer's mental energy; she treated him like a passing breeze, completely indifferent to his existence.
Everyone exchanged polite nods and greetings, chatting and laughing effortlessly.
None of them noticed a male server carrying a tray quietly edging closer.
Suddenly, the waiter pulled a gleaming, razor-sharp knife from beneath his tray.
As the light from the crystal chandeliers glinted off the blade, Lilith instantly lunged forward.
However, Summer was standing directly in Lilith's path.
A vicious, calculating gleam flashed in Lilith's eyes. Taking advantage of the momentum, she shoved Summer forcefully out of the way, throwing herself in front of Xavier. "Xavier, look out!"
Caught completely off guard, Summer stumbled forward, plunging directly toward the attacker's blade!
Staring at the lethal point of the knife, Summer broke into a cold sweat, the blood instantly freezing in her veins.
"Summer!" Two voices shouted in unison.
The color completely drained from Xander and Silas's faces as they sprang into action.
But Silas was much closer. He seized Summer's arm, yanked her forcefully backward, and wrapped his long arm tightly around her, pulling her completely into his chest.
Summer clutched Silas's jacket with a white-knuckled grip. Her nose was filled with the familiar, calming scent of agarwood she loved so much. Her heart hammered violently against her ribs, her breathing ragged.
"It's okay, you're okay," Silas murmured, gently patting her back. He sounded like he was trying to soothe her, but in reality, he was trying to calm himself.
"Slash—"
The sharp fruit knife narrowly missed Summer, burying itself deep into Lilith's back instead. Crimson blood rapidly soaked through her dress.
"Xavier... thank god you're okay," Lilith whispered, offering him a pale, tragic smile. She looked incredibly relieved, as if she had finally fulfilled her ultimate purpose.
"Gah—"
In the next second, Lilith coughed up a mouthful of blood and collapsed limply to the floor.
The waiter yanked the knife free, his face twisting into a feral snarl as he lunged at Xavier once more.
Supporting Lilith with one arm, Xavier lifted his leg and delivered a brutal kick, sending the attacker flying. Security immediately swarmed in and pinned the man to the ground.
Lilith was rushed to the hospital by a frantic Xavier.
Summer stared thoughtfully at the man struggling under the guards. Was this a random act of violence, or a calculated hit?
Was this man secretly working with Lilith?
Whether they colluded or not, given Lilith's deep-rooted hatred for Summer, she was absolutely certain Lilith's shove had been intentional. It was a perfect attempt to use the assassin to eliminate her.
That way, Lilith got to play the heroic savior for Xavier while simultaneously killing Summer. Two birds, one stone.
Silas was clearly thinking the exact same thing.
