Melissa could barely hide how much she despised him.
When Jordan realized Camila hadn’t shown up, he knew she wasn’t coming. Then he caught the cold stares from his former in-laws. He felt completely helpless.
“No matter what, Lillian is my daughter. That’s a fact. I know I made mistakes, and I want to make things right. Could you just let me—”
“No.” Melissa cut him off, her patience gone. “The best thing you can do for them is to stay away. Jordan Smith, hasn’t my daughter suffered enough because of you? Even after leaving you, Sandra Taylor kept haunting her like a ghost. Camila almost died because of you two. You and Sandra are nothing but trouble. Let me make this clear. Even if you dropped dead tomorrow, I would never let my daughter have anything to do with you again.”
Melissa had always been gentle, always spoke kindly, and treated everyone with respect. She had never lashed out at anyone like this before.
But how could she not hate him? They only had one daughter, and they’d protected her for her whole life, only for her to fall into the mess that was the Smith family. She finally got out, but she still couldn’t escape these people chasing after her like ghosts.
It was just a failed marriage. People get divorced every day. Why did her daughter have to pay for it with her life? And now, Camila was dealing with amnesia. The more Melissa thought about it, the harder it was to forgive the man standing in front of her.
She didn’t want to talk to Jordan anymore. She scooped Lillian up, settled her in the car, and told the driver, “Go home. Now.”
She didn’t give Jordan a chance to say goodbye.
Jordan could only stand there and watch as the car drove away, that heavy feeling pressing hard against his chest.
On the way home, Melissa was still upset.
“How does that jerk even have the nerve to show his face in front of Lillian?” she snapped at Jerry. “He talks about making amends. Who would ever believe that?”
Then she hugged her granddaughter tightly, her voice much softer. “Lillian, don’t be scared. Grandma didn’t mean to sound so harsh. I just got so angry. I don’t want any bad people tricking you.”
Lillian hugged her back with her little arms. “Don’t worry, Grandma. I’m really smart. No one’s going to trick me. And you’re not scary at all.”
She patted Melissa’s back with her small hand, copying the way her grandma always comforted her. “Don’t be upset anymore, Grandma. It’s not worth getting mad over someone else. If you get sick, I’ll feel sad!”
Melissa’s heart melted at her granddaughter’s words.
