The other guys who had talked to Audrey Williams nodded in agreement. “Ms. Williams really does have a great personality. She’s super easy to be around.”
“Seriously. You keep saying Walter never left her side, but it’s not like she was hanging all over him or anything.”
“It was more like Walter was looking out for her.”
Listening to all these guys sticking up for Audrey, Amy’s face grew darker by the second. “See? It hasn’t even been that long and she’s already got all of you wrapped around her finger. Of course none of you see what’s really going on.
“There are girls out there who act all sweet and friendly with guys, but it’s just an act. They pretend to be ‘one of the boys,’ but really, they’re just using that as an excuse to cross the line. They flirt right out in the open and then insist they’re just friends. Only guys would fall for something like that!”
Her words were biting, but Harden just found them funny. Audrey Williams, with her background, had no need to play games like that. The Williams family’s reputation aside, Audrey herself was impressive enough to have plenty of admirers back in Cabinda.
They’d all been friends for years, so Harden wasn’t even sure how to argue with Amy. But he trusted Walter. If something was off about Audrey, Walter would have noticed way before anyone else.
So Harden spoke up for Audrey. “Honestly, she just seems chill. You can see it in the way she carries herself, how well-mannered she is. And she wasn’t flirting with any of us, Amy. Don’t go around accusing her and ruining her reputation. She was really only close to Walter.”
“Yeah, besides playing cards, Ms. Williams barely talked to any of us,” another guy chimed in.
“It makes sense. Out of everyone here, Walter’s the only one she really knows.”
“She was just polite, really classy.”
With everyone backing Audrey up, Amy was getting steamed. Why was everyone defending her? She was about to lose it, but Iris pulled her aside and shot her a look, a silent message to let it go for now. Changing people’s minds didn’t happen overnight, it had to be done slowly.
Amy got the hint and took a breath, forcing herself to calm down. She seized the moment to ask Harden, “You’re all so quick to defend her. Do you guys know who she is? What family is she from in Cabinda?”
Harden just shrugged. “Sort of, but I don’t know many details.”
