“The medication is unpredictable right now. We can’t tell how things will progress, or how quickly it might get worse. All we can do is keep watching.”
Hearing this, Audrey Williams felt her heart sink even lower.
She knew Camila’s health had never been great, and that the team in Cabinda was pushing hard to develop an antidote.
She just hadn’t realized the drug would take effect so fast.
Suddenly, it hit her why her brother had been in such a hurry to marry Camila.
Maybe he already sensed something like this would happen.
Audrey didn’t say anything for a long time. On the other end, Dennis Williams could hear the worry in her silence. “Take care of yourself in Harrisburg,” he said, trying to comfort her. “I’m here with Camila. You don’t have to worry too much.
But remember what I asked you to do.”
Audrey sniffed and nodded, even though he couldn’t see her. “I know.”
They talked for a bit longer before hanging up. Audrey sat there, feeling completely miserable.
Walter Wilson noticed her mood shift and felt bad for her. He reached over and patted her gently on the shoulder.
“Don’t stress too much. If you really can’t stop worrying, once we finish up here, I’ll take you back to Cabinda so you can see her.”
Audrey just mumbled, “Okay.”
Right now, she had to follow her brother’s instructions and focus on The Smith Group.
If it weren’t for Jordan Smith, Camila wouldn’t be in danger, suffering through all this.
For the next few days, Audrey threw herself into dealing with The Smith Family.
She wasn’t just stealing projects from them anymore.
She started researching all their business partners, looking for any chance to lure them away.
But Jordan Smith wasn’t easy to beat. He was experienced, and as soon as he came back, he took charge with his usual speed and confidence, quickly getting The Smith Group back on track.
That forced Walter and Audrey to slow down.
Before they knew it, Iris’s birthday party was here.
The Carter Family had gone all out for the event, sending out fancy invitations weeks in advance to make sure everyone knew how important it was.
That evening, outside a five-star hotel in Harrisburg, luxury cars lined up as guests poured in.
Inside and out, you could see just how grand the Carter Family’s celebration was.
Walter had agreed to go with Audrey and arrived early to pick her up.
Audrey wore a custom pink sequin gown.
Her brother wore glasses too, but he gave off an elegant and cool energy, always so reserved.
Walter, though, was all charm and barely-contained wildness. He was impossible not to look at.
Audrey’s heart beat faster. She walked over and gently took his glasses off.
Walter blinked in surprise. “What are you doing?”
Audrey grinned. “You look way too good with these glasses on tonight. What if I don’t want anyone else to see?
You’re not wearing these. I’ll hold onto them for you.”
This version of Walter was for her eyes only.
Walter couldn’t help but laugh. “You’re being ridiculous.”
He reached for his glasses, but Audrey spun away with a laugh. “Nope. Not unless you tell me who gave you this makeover.”
Walter sighed, but he answered her anyway. “My mom did. I was just going to change my clothes, but before I could leave, she said I looked sloppy and insisted on fixing my hair and giving me those glasses.”
If it were up to him, he’d never waste time on his appearance.
Audrey beamed. “That’s Camila for you. She really has great taste.”
