Iris noticed everything, of course.
But honestly, she loved the attention. Being surrounded, being adored, it gave her a rush. She knew she was a catch, and there was never a shortage of people wanting her. Abbott was just another name on a long list.
And sure, Abbott came from a good family, but that didn’t mean he was her type. He wasn’t even in the running.
She gave him a sympathetic look. “Sorry, Abbott. You’re a great guy, really, but my heart’s already set on someone else.”
Abbott wasn’t buying it. His voice dropped, a little rough at the edges. “Walter Wilson doesn’t even like you.”
Iris clenched her jaw. She knew that. Everyone knew that. Still, having Abbott call her out stung, and she felt her patience thinning.
She lifted her chin and met his eyes. “So what? I want to try. How would I know if I’ll make it unless I give it a shot?”
Honestly, that answer annoyed Abbott more than a simple no ever could.
He stared at her, his eyes shadowed. “Do you want to bet on it? If he rejects you, you’ll give me a chance instead.”
Iris just smirked, full of confidence. “Just watch, Abbott. I’m going to make it happen.”
She was ready to walk away, but as she brushed past, Abbott grabbed her arm, his grip tight and desperate. His voice came out low, practically a growl. “Iris, why are you being like this? You really think you can mess with the Wilson family? Would you seriously force yourself on a guy who doesn’t even care about you?”
His words caught her off guard. For a second, surprise flickered across her face, but she pushed it down fast, pretending she didn’t care. “Abbott, what are you talking about? I’d never do anything like that. What kind of person do you think I am? I just want to tell him how I feel, that’s it.”
Abbott frowned, staring her down. “You better not be lying.”
She rolled her eyes. Abbott was acting crazy. She shook off his hand and strode away without looking back.
Abbott watched her leave, his stare dark and brooding.
Back in the ballroom, he spotted Walter Wilson and glared, anger simmering just beneath the surface. For a second, he actually considered confronting Walter right then and there.
At that moment, his phone buzzed. A message popped up.
Bro, the woman you asked me to check out, I think she’s Ms. Taylor from NextGen Technologies.
Seeing “NextGen Technologies,” Abbott’s heart skipped a beat. His eyes immediately darted to Audrey Williams, disbelief and shock written clear on his face.
She was Audrey.
He’d been part of the group trying to dig into her past, but her details were buried deep. All he’d ever found out was that she worked at NextGen Technologies.
He never expected her background to be this impressive.
It only took a moment for him to accept it, though. Only someone like Ms. Taylor from NextGen Technologies could get that kind of special treatment from Walter Wilson, and have people like Leda and Palmer showing her so much respect.
